Effects of Green Revolution System
(GRS)
• Land abandoned by conventional GRS - Globally
1500 Mha available, of which about 500 Mha is
by conventional GRS
• Deep debt/ distress of producer communities
(60% population)
• Climate change, Ecological degradation pollution of air, water and soil
• Alienates producers from the earth systems
IMMEDIATE SOLUTION TO REVERSE
EFFECTS
• Identify how many Mha available in India to
make a Governance plan and budget for
rolling back and putting the rural poor
producers gainfully back to work on
abandoned land
LONGTERM SOLUTIONS TO REVERSE
EFFECTS
• Contract successful farmers to guide producers’
research for development (AR4D), adapting to
climate change, using results for wide replication
among producer communities in the vicinity
• Proposals for extension needs to roll back the high
risk/cost GRS to their climate friendly systems,
sustainable in the long term
• Value addition increase shelf life for storage
minimise post harvest losses
OTHER SOLUTIONS FOR LONGTERM
SUSTAINABILITY
• Document AR4D by successful farmers, as
evidence to roll back the high cost/ risk
conventional GRS followed in the vicinity
• Reorient school and college education
curriculum, include changing ecological
sensibilities - present and future
• Producer oriented economies of scope AR4D
to be on going on farm, sustainable, producer
friendly agro ecology systems
R4D for Feed Production
R4D is needed on following to expand production:
Vermicompost - a good substitute for fish meal
Excess Earthworms as feed for fish and or poultry
Algae – fastest growing plant organism, converts
CO2 into 70% of the earth’s oxygen,
Eg., one acre of algae produces the same quantity of
protein in a year as 21 acres of soybeans or 49 acres
of corn
What Will This Achieve
• Low risk low cost producer oriented
economies of scope agro ecology systems
• Access own nutritious food and cash
requirements - Feeding the population
• Reduce hunger, malnutrition, poverty,
• Reduce effects of climate change
• Increase net profit/ purchasing power,
improving livelihood
• Contribute to economic development and
GDP
THANK YOU
