F. The Knee
1. Largest joint in the body consisting
of 3 joints
a. between the patella and the
femur (gliding)
b. Lateral condyles of the femur
and tibia (hinge)
c. Medial condyles of the femur
and tibia (hinge)
2. Consists of ten components
a. Articular capsule- ligamentous
sheath of muscle tendons that
encase the joint
b. Medial and lateral patellar
retinacula- quadriceps muscle
tendons support the anterior
surface
c. Patellar ligament- purpose is to
strengthen the anterior
1. Has a pad of fat for
separation and cushioning
d. Oblique popliteal ligamentposterior ligament connecting
femur and tibia
1. Gives posterior strength
e. Arcuate popliteal ligamentconnects femur to the fibula
1. Gives lower lateral
strength on posterior
f. Tibial(medial) collateral
ligament- connects medial area of
femur to medial portion of tibia
g. Fibular (lateral) collateral
ligament- lateral surface of the
femur connects to the lateral
surface of the fibula
h. Intracapsular ligaments:
1. Anterior cructiate
ligament (ACL)- goes from
the anterior of the tibia to the
posterior medial portion of
the femur
2. Posterior cruciate
ligament (PCL)- goes from
the posterior of tibia to the
anterior medial area of the femur
i. Articular disc- Fibrocartilage
discs between femur and tibia;
both lateral and medial menisci
j. Bursae- a sac or pouch of
synovial fluid located at friction
points
1. In knee they are anterior,
medial, and lateral
