Intro to Human Heart anatomy The Heart The heart is a complex machine with several key parts detailed pictures in your book on pages315-317 The location and size of human heart The human heart is approximately the size of your fist It is located posteriorly to the sternum and flanked on both sides by the lungs The apex of the heart points towards the left hip The base of the heart points towards the right shoulder This is the base This is the apex Coverings and Walls Pericardium -double sac of serous membrane shown as the parietal pericardium and fibrous pericardium coverings and walls Epicardium or visceral pericardium -- hugs the external surface of the heart and is part of the heart’s wall coverings and walls Myocardium -thick bundles of cardiac muscle twisted and whorled into ringlike arrangements coverings and walls Endocardium -- a thin glistening sheet of endothelium that lines the heart chambers Heart Chambers The heart has 4 chambers the chambers at the base are called the atria (right and left atrium respectively) The chambers at the apex are called the ventricles (right and left respectively) Major Vessels of the Heart Aorta Superior Vena Cava Inferior Vena Cava
