Sept. 30, 2011 Ms. Wu says…Get to work! 1. Copy homework into planner. 2. Work on the warm up individually in pen. When done, turn into manila folder. 3. Grade HW 1.11 (key below). ________________________________________________ 5) 4x + 12 41) P = -24w + 34 6) 8y + 16 A = -108w + 72 7) 5m + 25 17) ¼ m – 2 18) - ¾ p + ¾ 33) 8r + 8 34) 14t + 4 37) 10w – 35 40) P = 2v + 16 A = 5v + 15 The Distributive Property • a (b + c) = ab + ac • (b + c) a = ba + ca Super-Evil Mystery Numbers • PART 1: Find each of the following mystery numbers. Record in your notes the process that you followed to find each mystery number. • PART 2: Compute the sum of the mystery numbers. Write the sum in the box and raise your hand so Ms. Wu can check it. – If you get the correct sum, you get a sticker! – One mystery number has a fractional answer. • PART 3: Create a mystery number problem like the ones above to try to stump the class! Mystery Number Stumpers 1. Must be structured like one of the mystery number problems (written as a word problem) 2. Must be on a sheet of paper with title and heading. 3.Must have the corresponding equation and a solution. 4. Everything must be correct and the problem has to be challenging! Equations with Variables on Both Sides: Additional Examples • 1) 13x - 5x – 5 = x + 7 + x 3(x – 2) + 3x = 4x - 6 12x + 36 = 2(6x – 10) 5x – 3(x + 2) = 2x - 6 Avoiding Fractions • ½x+¼=6 • 2/3(x – 4) = 2 Vocabulary • Solution Set: The set of values that make an equation true. Denoted S = {answers} • Empty Set (for no solution): The set containing nothing. Denoted S = {} or S = {Ø} • Identity (for infinite solutions): An equation that is true for every value of the variable (can write S = {all reals} Unit 1.2 Common Mistakes • Not solving equations using the properties of equality (“golden rule”) and showing inverse operations line-by-line on both sides • Ignoring operation signs when combining like terms. – Change all subtraction to… • Forgetting to draw the coordinate axes • Solving equations by guess and check instead of algebraically • Proper formatting for expressions Quiz Corrections • Due on the day of the test (10/6 or 10/7) • All missed problems must be completely corrected on a separate sheet of paper and attached to the original quiz. • Check answers with peers, knowledgeable adults, or me. • Can get up to a 20 out of 24. Homework • HW 1.12: Solving Equations with Fractions and Variables on Both Sides • Pgs 157 -158: 7, 10, 14, 23, 25, 26, 32, 34, 37, 40
