Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional Phrase

A prepositional phrase show relationships. They
can modify nouns or verbs.
Adjective prepositional phrase

Shows a relationship between a noun and the
object of the preposition.
It modifies a noun or pronoun just like a one
word adjective
Explains which one or what kind
Usually come after the noun

Hubert ate a huge piece of blueberry pie.



Write each sentence. Circle the prepositional
phrase and underline the noun it modifies





The candle on the piano is vanilla scented.
Use that container of fertilizer to feed the
plants.
The books from the library must be returned
today.
Anna likes pancakes with butter and maple
syrup.
That radish in the salad is very spicy.
Adverb prepositional phrases

Modifies the verb.
Tells how, when, where, or to what extent
something happens, just like a one word adverb.

The trip photos are in the album.

Write each sentence. Circle the adverb
prepositional phrase and underline the verb it
modifies.
 David and Walter walked to the store.
 The pitcher played beyond his average
performance.
 Olivia must be home before 7 pm.
 Geno will put that can into the recycling bin.
 Their family vacations in June.
 He went straight to his room.
Adverb or Prepositional Phrase?

A Prepositional phrase always has an object.

Adverb:

The dog ran around.

Prepositional phrase:

The dog ran around the house.
Which one?
Preposition or adverb








The beaver swam to his underwater door.
The coals are hot; you can put you hot dog in.
The sails billowed during the boat ride.
The bear crawled into his den and went to sleep.
Dan sat nearby as the air show continued.
Dolphins live underneath the ocean.
When the rain started, we went inside.
The crowd clapped as the band passed by.
