


Born in Mecca- 570 A.D. an orphan

Successful Merchant- became wealthy
Revisit the history of Mecca- Ishmael- tie to Abraham
Visited nearby mountain to escape, pray, meditate

There he was visited by the Angel Gaberiel

Asked to proclaim the word of God- fearful due to illiteracy
Muhammad

Public Life

Did not want to accept his calling


His wife and friend encouraged him
He taught against the polytheism of Mecca
Local merchants fearful of trade disruption
 Threatened Muhammad’s life


Muhammad fled Mecca in 622 to Medina
This is referred to as his Hijra
 Beginning of the Islamic Calendar- now 1429 AH


Accepted in Medina- taught and gained support


By 632 Muhammad has influenced and
encouraged the unity of Bedouin tribes



Oppressed Byzantines- saw Arabs as liberators
Muslim Military organization- horses / benefits

After Muhammad’s death (632)- Muslim umma split


Office of Khalifa-Caliph was est. under Abu Bakr



Discussion and division over whom should lead
Very influential because of friendship with Muhammad
Qur’ an was final authority on ALL matters-spirit / secular

Two different groups divided by loyalties to caliph

Sunnis- Caliph is political leader of Islam, but not religious
