Introducing Islam We will explore what we already know of Islam and Muslim belief and practices. We will be able to say where Muslims live today. We will be able to give a basic outline of Muslim beliefs. We will be able to explain the crescent moon and star symbol. We will be able to state and defend some of our own beliefs. Muhammad. Prophet of Islam We will study the life of Muhammad and Muslim beliefs about him. We will be able to tell the story of Muhammad’s life. We will be able to express a view on what happened in the cave. We will be able to say which personal qualities of Muhammad suit being a prophet. We will be able to identify our own good and not so good qualities. The Qur’an We will explore the role of the Qur’an in Islamic life. We will be able to say: How it came into existence. What language it is written in. How it is organized. We can support each of our five views with reasons. Hajj We will explore the rituals and meaning of the pilgrimage to Mecca. We can explain why pilgrimage is important to religious people. We can describe the rituals of Hajj. We can explain the meaning of the rituals of Hajj. We can describe the feelings of a Muslim who has completed the Hajj. Ramadan We will study the role of Ramadan in Muslim life. We can explain why religions often have rituals about food. We can explain the “rules” of Ramadan. We can explain why Muslims think Ramadan is so important. We can describe the difficulties and rewards of a successful Ramadan. Women in Islam We will explore the role of women in Islam. We will be able to state some differences in the treatment of women between the West and some Muslim countries. We will be able to explain what an arranged marriage is. We will be able to offer views on the role of women in Islam with supporting reasons. Muslim Influence We will explore the ways in which Islam has changed the world. You will be able to:Identify common words that come from Muslim sources. Explain Muslim contributions to Medicine, Mathematics, and Quality of Life. Express a view on the value of Muslim contributions.
