Introduction
What is an earthquake?
A shaking of the earth's surface/crust caused by
the release of stress accumulated along geologic
faults or by volcanic activity.
Test Your Knowledge
• What country in the world has 2,000 tremors
a day? (That is nearly 6 earthquakes a day!)
• An earthquake can cause a huge tidal wave
called a ___________?
• What actually causes an earthquake?
The country that has the most reported
earthquakes is called Tajikistan. It is a country of
tall mountains located on the border of
Afghanistan.
An earthquake can cause a huge tidal wave
called a tsunami.
A tsunami can cause severe destruction
and possibly death.
What actually causes an earthquake?
An earthquake is caused by the movement of
tectonic plates. When these plates move it causes
stress to the earth’s crust. This stress causes the
crust to either shake or crack.
