What is Science? Karen Chu, MS (Master of Science) Aka Mason’s Mom What does a scientist look like? Anyone can be a scientist! What do scientists do? ? They ask questions! They do experiments to find the answers! How many different kinds of science are there? • Acoustics - science of sound • Limacology - study of slugs • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Aerodynamics - science of how air or gas move Anthropology - study of human cultures Astronomy - study of things in space Biology - study of life Botany - study of plants Cardiology -study of the heart Chemistry - study of properties of substances Criminology - study of crime; criminals Dendrology - study of trees Ecology - study of environment Entomology - study of insects Garbology - study of garbage Geology - study of earth's crust Geography - study of surface of the earth Graphology - study of handwriting Herpetology - study of reptiles and amphibians Horticulture - study of gardening Kinesiology - study of human movement and posture • • • • • • • • • • Linguistics - study of language Mathematics - study of magnitude, number, and forms Meteorology - study of weather Mycology - study of funguses Oceanography - study of oceans Otology - study of the ear Palaeontology - study of fossils Pharmacology - study of drugs Physics - study of properties of matter and energy Radiology study of X-rays and their medical applications Sociology - study of society Speleology - study and exploration of caves Tidology - study of tides Toxicology - study of poisons Virology - study of viruses Zoology - study of animals • • • • • • And many, many more!! What kind of scientist am I? I am a clinical scientist. How to conduct a science experiment Steps BIG Scientific Word 1. Ask a question! OBSERVATION 2. Think of a way to answer the question EXPERIMENT 3. Predict what will happen HYPOTHESIS 4. Conduct the experiment METHODS 5. Watch and write down what happens RESULTS 6. Decide if your hypothesis was right or wrong and tell what you learned CONCLUSION Acids and Bases • Acid o A solution that has an excess of H+ ions. It comes from the Latin word acidus that means "sharp" or "sour" • Base o A solution that has an excess of OH- ions. Another word for base is alkali Acids and Bases • Acids • Bases How do you measure how acidic or basic something is? • pH scale - A measure of the number of H+ ions in a solution. Today’s Experiment • OBSERVATION • EXPERIMENT • HYPOTHESIS • Is vinegar an acid or a base? Is baking soda solution an acid or a base? • Use Ph paper to measure whether vinegar or baking soda solution is acidic or basic • ????? Today’s Experiment • METHODS 1. 2. 3. 4. • RESULTS • CONCLUSION Take 2 pH strips from box Dip the end of one strip in the vinegar solution Dip the end of the other strip in the baking soda solution Compare each strip to the pH scale Write down what the colors and numbers were on your strips for vinegar and baking soda solution. You can even draw a picture of what you see! Was your hypothesis right or wrong? What did we learn today? • Anyone can be a scientist! o • Even Mason’s mom!! Scientists ask questions and do experiments to answer them! SCIENCE IS FUN! Questions?
