Tectonic mountains - Mountains built by
tectonic forces.
Block faulting -
Tension forces rock to
to move
Oceanic crust -
The crust underneath
the ocean
Mountain belts -
Contain mountain
ranges that are parallel
to each other
Vocab cont.

Hot spot -

Isostatic-
A place were most
earthquakes or
volcanoes are
occurring .
Subjected to equal
pressure from every
side
History





The earliest american eruption of mount.
Kilauea was in november of 1790.
The latest eruption was in Jan- 3 of 1983
The worlds earliest known earhtquake was in
china in 1177B.C.
Mount. Pinatubo erupted in 1991 and changed
global temp.
The first urban civillization was on the
hymalayas and that is when man first made
cave homes.
Volcanic eruptions
and earthquakes



Many volcanoes are underwater they are mostly located around the
mid Atlantic ridge and east pacific rise
Volcanoes above water that are active are around the convergent
plate boundaries
Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991 and released sulfur dioxide in to the
atmosphere which cooled the temperatures worldwide
Earthquakes



An earthquake is a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's crust that
creates seismic waves
When the Earth's plates slip, it creates the fault that is the center of the
earthquake
The sudden shift in plates can cause landslides, tsunamis, and sometimes
volcanic eruptions
Hot Spots
and
Mountain Building
Hot Spots
 The Hawaiian islands
form a series of hots
spots
 The source of heat is
thought to be the
decay of radioactive
elements
 Caused by narrow
streams of hot mantle
Mountain building

Mountain building contains
three stages ...
1. Accumulation of sediment
2. A period of rock deformation
3. crust uplift


Volcanic rocks can be found
on mountains from oceanic
crust
Part of the Himalayas are
young and are still actively
uplifting
Impact on Humans





Earthquakes are known
for their destruction
Millions have died because
of them and billions of
dollars have been spent for
repairs
Volcano eruptions can be
good or bad
They can force people to
leave their homes and
everything can be
destroyed.
Volcano eruptions over
time can also build up to
form islands – like Hawaii
