D – domain Did K – kingdom King P – phylum Phillip’s C – class Cousin O – order Order F – family Fried G – genus Goose S - species Special? Why do biologists organize living things into groups? What do the levels of classification indicate about the relationship between organisms? What characteristics are used to classify orgnisms into domains and kingdoms? Classification – process of grouping things based on their similarities. Biologists use classification to organize living things into groups so that the organisms are easier to study. Taxonomy : the scientific study of how living things are classified. 1750’s – Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus came up with a system that we still use today: binomial nomenclature Genus and Species : The first word in an organism’s scientific name is its genus (classification grouping that contains similar, closely related organisms) Three domains: bacteria, archaea, eukarya. Organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their bodies. Bacteria – Prokaryotes – organisms whose cells lack a nucleus. Archaea - unicellular prokayotes that are not bacteria (live in hot ocean floor vent, swamps, and intestines of cows) Eukarya – eukaryotes ( organisms with cells that contain nuclei) Scientists classify eukayotes into one of 4 kingdoms : protists, fungi, plants and animals. What are the 8 levels of classification? What are the three domains?
