What is disease???
The term 'disease' refers to any abnormal
condition of an organism that impairs
function. This causes discomfort,
dysfunction, distress, or death to the
person afflicted or those in contact with
the person.
We decided to concentrate on two
diseases: AIDS and CANCER,
because they are one of the most
frequent. We think that it is really
important to people know more about
them.
AIDS means Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a sickness that
attacks the body’s natural defence system against disease. AIDS itself does
not kill,
but because the body’s defence system is damaged, the patient has a
reduced ability to fight off many other diseases including flu or the common
cold. We know that AIDS is caused by a virus HIV which invades healthy
cells, including
the white blood cells that are part of our defence system. The virus takes
control of the healthy cell’s genetic material and forces the cells to make a
copy of the virus. The cell then dies and the multipled virus moves on to
invade and kill other healthy cells

People ill with AIDS are victims of the HIV, but
also of the society, which often is not tolerant
enough to accept them. They live under big
pressure, afraid of dying lonely and of painful
death. They lose their jobs, friends and family.
People are really afraid of AIDS mostly because
they don’t know enough about it. They believe ,
that they can very easily get infected, but it’s not
true.
The truth is that it’s not possible to get infected by touch,
kiss or using the same bath. However, accidental sexual
contacts or unsterilized medical equipment can be
responsible for the contagion. It also can be passed in
blood products or from a pregnant woman with AIDS to her
baby. If we don’t want to be infected, we must use
condoms and sterilized medical equipment. What is very
important for people is to educate themselves about the
risk of AIDS , otherwise we may never be able to combat
the epidemic.
Cancer is a class of diseases or disorders characterized
by uncontrolled division of cells and the ability of these
cells to spread, either by direct growth into adjacent
tissue through invasion, or by implantation into distant
sites by metastasis (where cancer cells are transported
through the bloodstream or lymphatic system). Cancer
may affect people at all ages, but risk tends to increase
with age. It is one of the principal causes of death in
developed countries.
There are many types of cancer. Severity of symptoms depends on the
site and character of the malignancy and whether there is metastasis. A
definitive diagnosis usually requires the histologic examination of tissue
by a pathologist. This tissue is obtained by biopsy or surgery. Most
cancers can be treated and some cured, depending on the specific type,
location, and stage. Once diagnosed, cancer is usually treated with a
combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. As research
develops, treatments are becoming more specific for the type of cancer
pathology. Drugs that target specific cancers already exist for several
types of cancer. If untreated, cancers may eventually cause illness and
death, though this is not always the case.
The most frequent types of tumour
Many forms of cancer are associated with exposure to
environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, radiation, alcohol,
and certain viruses. Some risk factors can be avoided or reduced.
If you make regular
examinations, you will have
