Each egg and each sperm
Causes of Genetic Disorders:
Radiation or chemicals cause changes
in the order of DNA “letters”
-Mutated DNA can be inherited by the
child (in the sperm or egg)
-Damage can occur to the egg or sperm
producing cells (ovaries or testes)
-Damage can occur to the sperm or egg
-Damage can occur to the embryo after
conception
• Types of DNA mutations:
• A genetic disorder can result when:
• A single gene is mutated
• Several genes are mutated, all working
together
• One or more genes is missing
• An entire chromosome is missing
• There is an extra chromosome
