The immunoglobulin-like genetic predetermination of the brain: the protocadherins, blueprint of the neuronal network Review Article Naturwissenschaften (2001) , N. Hilschmann H.U. Barnikol et al. 2002. 1. 14. 25th MPL Lab. Seminar A-Ram Jeong The Structure and function of protocadherins. Protocadherins are celladhesion molecules. Their morphogenetic capacity is accomplished by their bipartite structure, which is very similar to that of classical cadherins. Besides a transmembraneous section they have an N-terminal extracellular part consisting of six domains and a C-terminal intracellular domain. The protocadherin genes. We distinguish three classes of protocadherins: alpha, beta and gamma. In the genome there are three serially repeated V-gene sets, each followed by corresponding C-genes.
