Local
Local media is usually only available
in a discrete geographical area.
There are numerous local radio
stations, though some of these are
part of a larger network.
Some larger towns have local cable
channels making it possible for
small local companies to utilise
television advertising.

Regional
Regional media covers a wider area
than local media.
There are regional newspapers and
most of the television networks on
ITV can be used for regional
advertising.

National
National media gives companies an
opportunity to deliver a message
across the whole country.
This can be through a national
newspaper such as The Guardian or
on a television network such as
Channel 4.

International
More of today’s products are
international and are available
across the world.
Most large companies market their
products across a whole continent,
such as Europe, and will often use
the same marketing drive in a range
of different countries.

Terrestrial
Even with the growth of digital and
satellite television the biggest
audiences will still be found on the
five main terrestrial channels, of
which three have advertising.
The growth of digital terrestrial
television through Freeview is
expanding the number of media
channels that advertisers can use.

Satellite
Digital satellite allows consumers a
very wide choice of channels and as
a result advertisers can now target
advertising at niche markets and
selected audiences.
However this spread of channels can
dilute an advertiser’s message.

Worldwide web
The internet and the web are giving
companies an even wider audience
and often requires clever use of
technology to attract the attention of
the consumer.

Specialist media
Specialist media relates to channels
relating to a specific specialist area
and allows advertises to target
specific groups, for example doctors
or teachers.
