Landscape Plants
Deciduous Trees

This kind of plant has a
single trunk at the base,
loses its leaves in the
fall and can provide
shade in the summer.
Example: Ornamental
Pear
Deciduous Shrubs

A type of bush that
loses all its leaves at one
time of the year.
Example: Snowberry
Broadleaf Evergreens

Rhododendrons are an example of this
group of shrubs and trees that do not lose
their leaves and do not have needle or
scalelike foliage.
Needle or Awl-Like Evergreens

This kind of tree never
loses its leaves all at one
time. Example:
Psuedotsuga menziesii
Annuals

A plant that completes
its life cycle in a year or
less. Tagetes ssp. Is an
example.
Bedding Plants

Usually a space is left in the
landscape for these plants
which will be replaced each
year in the spring.
Perennials

A perennial is a plant
that lives for more than
two years. Examples are
the butterfly bush and
geraniums.
Bulbs

In everyday
conversation, any plant
that grows from a
thickened underground
structure. Example:
daffodil
Crops
Fruit Trees and Small Fruits

In everyday
conversation, the
ovaries of these trees
and shrubs are
distinguished from
vegetables because they
are sweet and could be
served for dessert.
Vegetables
A vegetable, in contrast, is
an herbaceous plant
cultivated for an edible part
(seeds, roots, stems, leaves,
bulbs, tubers, or nonsweet
fruits). So, to be really
nitpicky, a fruit could be a
vegetable, but a vegetable
could not be a fruit.
Cut Flowers and Foliage

Baby’s Breath,
Carnations and Roses
are all grown for the
floriculture industry to
be used in
arrangements.

Potted Foliage Plants

These ornamental
plants, valued for their
colorful leaves or ability
to flourish in low light,
are intended for display
indoors. Examples are
the Corn plant and
Snake plant.
Potted Flowering Plants

These potted plants are
given as gifts and are
valued for their showy
flowers; examples are
the Chrysanthemum and
Poinsettia.
