Symbiosis Living Together Agenda 4/9/2015 • Warm-Up • Symbiotic Relationships Notes • Living Together- video Warm-Up 1. List three reasons an organism might rely on another organism. 2. Give three examples of symbiotic relationships. SYMBIOSIS • A relationship between organisms of different species is called symbiosis. • Four kinds of symbiosis are recognized: 1. mutualism, 2. commensalism, 3. parasitism, 4. predator/prey. SYMBIOSIS Mutualism • A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit is called mutualism. Acacia Tree and Ants Human Bacterial Flora Bees and Flowers SYMBIOSIS Commensalism • Commensalism is a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other species is unaffected. Clown Fish and Sea Anemone Monarch Butterfly and Milkweed SYMBIOSIS Parasitism • A symbiotic relationship one species benefits and the other is harmed is called parasitism. SYMBIOSIS Parasitism • Parasites have evolved in such a way that they harm, but usually do not kill the host species. Tape Worms in Intestine Tongue Eating Louse Parasitic Wasp Mosquitos Symbiosis Predator and Prey • In a predator and prey relationship one species is benefitted and the other is killed. Symbiosis Competition • A symbiotic relationship in which organisms fight/compete for food, shelter, a mate or other resources. Symbiosis Predator and Prey • Predators seek out and eat other organisms. • Predation is found in all ecosystems and includes organisms that eat plants and animals. ORGANISMS IN ECOSYSTEMS • A habitat is the place WHERE an organism lives out its life. ORGANISMS IN ECOSYSTEMS A niche is the WAY an organism lives out it’s life • how it meets its specific needs for food and shelter • how it survives, • and where it reproduces in its environment. ORGANISMS IN ECOSYSTEMS • Why is it thought that two species can’t exist for long in the same community if their niches are the same? Living Together • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8g1B U29WVg
