Lion King Discussion
#1: Food Chain page 69
• Remember this is inspired by the movie
• Any relationship can be used if it makes sense
from the scenes in the film
#1 continued
• Check your vocabulary log for the
ecological roles
– Make sure you know the definitions of the
following:
• Producer
• Primary consumer
• Secondary consumer
#1 continued
• The third question for # 1 wants to you
understand feeding relationships in certain
biomes (thinking behind the movie)
– This movie is based on the Tropical Savanna
biome (page 101)
– Research the top predators in the biome and
then reason what their prey would be. There is a
really good list there.
#2
• Looking at page 101 for this question make sure
you have the following
– 8 organisms (at least two plant types; 2 top predators; 2
herbivores; and one decomposer and one scavenger)
– Remember what an ecological role is: page 67-68, take
special look at the consumers--especially detritvores
and decomposers
– What could be a possible decomposer or scavenger in
this biome?
#2
Organism Descriptions
Ecological role: Secondary Consumer;
Type:
Predator; Carnivore
#3
• Back to page 101
– There is a list of abiotic factors, list three
– Know what abiotic and biotic is (your
vocabulary log)
– Choose three biotic factors
• How are all of these connected?
– Take a look at the water cycle, carbon cycle and
nitrogen cycles on page 75-78 to answer this
question.
#4
• For this question you first have to know
what a population is…
– Page 64; 119-120
– What could be a possible population in this
community?
– Now define what a community is…page 64
#5
• Describe the entire Pride Rock ecosystem
– Look at page 101
– How is this different from an ecological
community?
#6-9
Tertiary consumers
Secondary consumers
Primary Consumers
Grasses
Primary Producers
100,000 Kg
• Look on page 72
• 6 organisms in total
– At energy pyramids
• Make sure this is on your
vocabulary log
• Your organisms are
appropriate for movie and
the biome (page 101)
• At the bottom pyramid can
only be producers
• Second trophic level can
only be herbivores or
omnivores
• Secondary consumers on
third level and at the top is
a top predator (tertiary
consumer)
#10-11
• Make sure you have the definition of Niche
on your vocab log
– Look on page 91-92
– INTERPRET the definition and examples given
in the book in light of the movie.
– DO NOT write about woodland birds on my
LION KING (AFRICAN SAVANNA BIOME
ACTIVITY)
#12
• Look at pages 150-151
– The definition of biodiversity is on page 150
– In light of the definition of ecosystem biodiversity why
is biodiversity important to pride rock (an African
savanna biome)
– (b) When you get ready to answer this question I want
to know why it is important to not over hunt, over prey,
or allow the prey to over populate.
– [c] look on page 151 and read the two sections about
threats to biodiversity and habitat alteration in light of
the movie
#13
• Know that Aesthetic means why the biome is
beautiful and how this beauty derived from
biodiversity.
• Environmental:
– How is the environment balanced? Are there too many
predators? Too little? Too many herbivores? Not
enough plants?
• Ethical/Moral
– Who suffers from the imbalance of the ecosystem?
Who dies? Does the ecosystem collapse?
#14
• A naturally occurring species is one that evolved
and occurs naturally in an environment.
– A native species has a niche and a community role in
the environment
– Look on page 153 and describe what an invasive
species is.
• Described as a new species on your movie guide
– Read up on invasive species to describe what would
happen if a new grass came into the pride rock
ecosystem.
#15
• Know the following ecological roles
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Page 92-93
Competition (+/-)---evolutionary relationships
Predation (+/-) evolutionary relationship
Symbiosis (+/+) or (+/0)
Mutualism (+/+)
Commensalism (+/0)
Parasitism (+/-)
Question #16
• Interpret this quote in
light of the movie. The
food web on page 71
is one for a salt Marsh,
NOT an African
Tropical Savanna. But
the relationships are
similar.
#17
• Refer to the carbon cycle (p.76-77) and the
nitrogen cycle (78) for this question. Pay
close attention to the decomposition,
feeding, and photosynthesis components of
the carbon cycle
• Pay attention to detrification, reuse by
consumers, decomposition and uptake by
produces components of the nitrogen cycle.
#18
• Write a 3 sentence narrative from pages 6769 about the sun’s role in the ecosystem of
pride rock.
#19
• See question note #15 to help you with this
symbiotic relationship
– The author of this question wants to name the
relationship as one of the following
•
•
•
•
•
Commensalism
Mutualism
Parasitism
Predation or
Competition
– Read pages 92-93 to explain the type of relationships.
Use the symbols to describe the crocodile and the birds.
#20
• Know the definition of scavenger
– What role do they play in the ecosystem?
•
•
•
•
Predation
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism?
#21
• Food chains are models that show relationships
between producers and consumers. Producers are
always at the bottom of a food web or a food
pyramid. Primary consumers are always the
second and they can be herbivores or ominvores.
Secondary consumers eat the primary consumers
and tertiary consumers eat the secondary
consumers. Where do hyenas fit in this scheme of
things? How is the quote for 21 inaccurate?
Lion: Tertiary
Consumer;
carnivore
Hyena Food Chain
Wilderbeast: Primary
Consumer; Herbivore
Hyena: Secondary
Consumer;
Carnivore
Grasses:
Primary
producers
Bacteria
Decomposers
#22
• Review the different consumer roles for this
question (pages 68-69).
#23
• Review notes and questions from #21
#24
• Answer the advantage question using ideas
from the pyramid of numbers (p. 73)and
ideas about competition (p. 93). Know that
the “top of the food chain” really means the
top of a pyramid of numbers.
• The disadvantage topic means to think
about what would happen if there were too
many predators.
#25
• State what role simba plays in the
ecosystem (ecological role)and how simba
(and animals like him) helps maintain the
balance of pride rock.
#26
• Does scar over-prey?
• Does scar play his ecological role?
• (b) list the reasons why pride rock is failing
(not balanced)
– Nila and Simba’s mom give really good
reasons.
#3 Baboons
Diet:
Nuts, fruit,
seeds,
invertebras and
small
vertebras.
So that makes
them
Omnivorous
#4 Elephant Decomposition
When Elephants die
their bodies are
decomposed by
bacteria that live on
them and in the soil.
Thus their carbon and
nitrogen are returned
back to the biosphere
by the carbon and
nitrogen cycles
#5 Hyenas as Scavengers
What source of food
would be found at a
elephant grave yard?
#6 Grubs
These are bugs…
1) What do bugs eat?
2) Now, that you have
discussed what they eat
are they producers or
consumers?
3) Are they primary,
secondary, or tertiary?
