God, Glory, and Gold
• Europeans began to venture to Africa, India
(Portugal/England/the Netherlands or the
Dutch), China, and eventually found the
Americas (Spain).
• They explored areas for three reasons.
• First, to gain wealth. Explorers could sell
goods taken from other lands and make
large profits (Ex. Vasco da Gama).
• Second, to spread Christianity to the world.
• Christians in Europe felt it was their
responsibility to convert non-Christians
around the globe.
• Third, for the glory of their nation. Each
European country wanted to conquer
foreign lands for glory.
Technology
• When European’s arrived in new lands, they
had an advantage over the people because
of technology.
• Gunpowder gave Europeans the ability to
kill hundreds of indigenous people without
losing many men.
• New navigational devices allowed ships to
improve sailing methods and travel faster.
• Sailors began to better understand ocean
and wind currents.
• Ocean currents video
Spain
• While Portugal, Britain, and the
Netherlands were establishing trade empires
in Asia, Spain focused on the Americas.
• Following Columbus in 1492, Spain and
Portugal almost went to war over who
controlled certain lands. War was however
avoided with the signing of a treaty.
The Effects
• By the end of the 15th century, Britain, Portugal,
Spain, and the Netherlands had traveled to many
new worlds and established trade empires in these
areas.
• The next step would be to create colonies so
control could be established over the Indigenous
people.
• The idea to take over lands by military power
would be known as imperialism and define the
next several hundred years for European nations.
