Greek civilization would not only dominate
the region; it would ultimately extend the
influence of Greek culture over most of the
Western world.

The city was typically built on two levels:
•Top of hill = Acropolis was a fortified area on a hill.
•Below = open marketplace known as the agora,
theater, public buildings, homes

As trade and colonies expanded, the Greeks
came in contact with people from foreign
lands with different languages and customs.
Greeks called them barbaroi, people who
did not speak Greek, and felt superior to
them.
The English word barbarian comes from
this Greek term.

which included sacrifices, feasts, plays,
singing, and athletic competitions
