ART Art was a known point in Renaissance history. Many artists bloomed during this time, ones we still know today. Vincenzo Foppa was a painter for the dukes in Milan, and was considered that he had the most influence of the Lombards until Da Vinci came. Foppa was known for his skill in foreshortening and perspective. Foreshortening is distorting a picture to make it look 3-D, and perspective is similar to that but in “special relationships”. As other Renaissance painter did, he painted frescoes, and one of his most acclaimed pieces was the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian that is now currently in the Milan gallery called the Brera Gallery. He also did other works, including the Crucifixion and Madonna and Child with an Angel ART ACTIVITY Art was a known point in Renaissance history. There were many notable architects in different cities, and Milan held a man that was sometimes known as the “Greatest architect of the High Renaissance”. Bramante, which was a pseudonym for the real Donato di Angelo di Pascuccio, worked as both a painter and an architect. He had done small works of buildings and frescos, but had been credited for acquainting the Early Renaissance to architecture in the city of Milan. He had built some churches, which were contrasting to the Gothic style. Some of his known buildings were the Saint Maria, Saint Satiro, Saint Maria, and Saint Ambrogio. But his most famous work was the remaking of St. Peters Basilica. He had been picked out of other ideas, including Raphael and Michelangelo, giving promise to his skill. This work had a significant influence on smaller churches. But he had died before this work had been completed, and others had taken over the project, though his design of the east wing was kept. His renowned work in Milan was the St. Maria presso St. Satiro. It was not originally built by him, but was renovated in his works. It could be considered that it was “perfected” by his ideas. He created a relief behind the altar with arches and columns in the background. Bramante created a legacy for future architecture in Milan, leaving behind buildings that would be famous today. One of these legacies has influenced the museo del Novecento, which is a museum that was first completed in 1956, after the war ended (the war caused delays in the building because there were bombings and such). It has been restored presently and was inaugurated on December 6th, 2010. This building follows Bramante’s legacy of changing gothic architecture back to the classical architecture. This helped in the rebirth of the classical era in the renaissance. This building is not built upon the gothic perspective of high and light. This piece uses the Classical era’s arches. The reason why the word renaissance means rebirth is because it brought back the classical culture. This modern building in Milan depicts the arches of this era, showing Bramante’s legacy of bringing back the classical architecture. Even now we see the effects of the renaissances in our architecture.
