Explain the social, economic and political changes that contributed to the rise of Florence and the ideas of Machiavelli Monday, September 26, 2011 1. Bell work: What did you learn about the Middle Ages? 2. Unpack Standard 9 3. Notes: The Renaissance 4. Reading Assignment: The students will read and discuss answer to questions about Machiavelli and The Prince. 5. Writing Assignment: Write an essay about the Renaissance and explain the social, economic and political ideas that defined the age. • • Where did the Renaissance begin and how did the ideas of the Renaissance spread (Florence)? What were the social, economic and political ideas of the Renaissance (define Renaissance, know and understand the importance of patronage, identify Niccolo Machiavelli)? • Make sure that the date is in the upper corner and the title is across the top. • You will need to pay attention. The notes I will show you are only ½ of the answers. The other half comes from what I say. • You will need these notes at the end of class. • You may only do my class work. You should have paper and a writing utensil. • • • An age in European History between 1300 and 1500 humanity returns to a classical civilization. Changes took place in many areas: – Social – Economic, – Political • It began in Italy around 1360 and spread to Northern Europe in the mid-1400’s 1. Roman Heritage 2. The Patrons: The Medici Family • Where did the Renaissance begin and how did the ideas of the Renaissance spread (Florence)? • What were the social, economic and political ideas of the Renaissance (define Renaissance, know and understand the importance of patronage, identify Niccolo Machiavelli)? • Social Values: – The Renaissance Attitude • A secular world view: • Education was important • A renewed interest in answering “Why”. • Achievement was celebrated!!!!! • These ideas only applied to the Upper and Middle Class Man • Economics Values – Money was now important: Buy things, Positions, Power! – If you had money, you had power – Patronage • The idea that a rich person was suppose to use their money to support art, architecture, literature, and education • An artist who worked for a patron was required to make his patron look good. • Politics – purely secular.
