Definition The definition of the digestive system is the group of organs and glands that work together to digest food. The Process • First, you chew your food. • Next, food is mixed with saliva. • You swallow your food, and it goes down your throat to the esophagus, to the stomach. • Food enters small intestine. In the small intestine chemical digestion and absorption. • Food enters large intestine. Most things that enter the large intestine are waste products. • These waste products are pushed out through the anus. Key Terms • Digestion- The process by which your body • • • • • breaks down the food you eat. Nutrients-The substances in foods that your body needs to function properly. Urinary System-A group of organs that work together to remove liquid waste from the blood. Urine-A liquid waste made from waste products mixed with excess water. Saliva-As you chew, the food is mixed with a liquid called saliva. Excretion-The removal of liquid wastes from the body. Bladder- A muscular, baglike organ that stores this liquid waste until it can be released from the body. Urethra- When the bladder is full, the waste leaves the body through a single tubelike structure. Urination-The release of this waste from the body. Filtration-The microscopic filters remove the wastes from the blood through a process called filtration. Common Digestive Problems • Heartburn-A burning feeling in the esophagus caused by a backflow of acidic stomach contents. • Diarrhea-An increase in the amount and number of times a person passes solid waste. • Constipation-A condition in which passing solid waste is difficult and infrequent. How the Parts Work • • • • Teeth- Chews food. Salivary Glands- Produces saliva. Throat and Esophagus- Passage way to the stomach. Liver, gallbladder, and the pancreas release chemicals into the small intestine. • Small Intestine- Small intestine digests food. • Large Intestine- Holds the waste products. • Anus- Pushes waste products out of body. Interesting Facts • Nutrients are the substances in foods that help your body function properly. • Foods move through the small intestine by the contractions of the smooth muscle of the small intestine. • No digestion happens in the large intestine. Summary • The digestive system is a group of organs that helps process food that you eat. The digestive system allows food to be broken down while in the small intestine. The digestive system helps us not have a stomach aches at times.
