What can I do with a Major in...? What can I do with a Major in English? English is the study of both the written and spoken language, as well as, the discovery of techniques for using it effectively. Although English is not an occupation in and of itself, the skills one acquires from this area of study can be applied to many careers. An English degree allows you the ability to work in areas where oral and written communication and interpretation of language is essential. The ability to write clearly and effectively is perhaps the most valued skill a person can possess, as is the ability to read perceptively and critically. Research is also an important tool to have efficiency in, to be able to search out a mass of data, organize it and present it skillfully in writing is vital. A liberal-arts degree such as English can point directly to a career or occupation in the teaching profession, writing profession or the publishing profession. It also prepares you, skill wise, for more diverse fields such as business, research, education, finance, culture, health care entertainment and communication. A degree in English will better prepare you for the world of professional work, as compared to a more narrowly focussed technical education. In general, most employers are looking for people who can think clearly and critically.
