What can I do with a Major in English?
English is the study of both the written and spoken language, as well as, the discovery
of techniques for using it effectively. Although English is not an occupation in and of itself, the
skills one acquires from this area of study can be applied to many careers. An English degree
allows you the ability to work in areas where oral and written communication and
interpretation of language is essential. The ability to write clearly and effectively is perhaps the
most valued skill a person can possess, as is the ability to read
perceptively and critically. Research is also an important tool to
have efficiency in, to be able to search out a mass of data, organize it
and present it skillfully in writing is vital.
A liberal-arts degree such as English can point directly to a
career or occupation in the teaching profession, writing profession or
the publishing profession. It also prepares you, skill wise, for more
diverse fields such as business, research, education, finance, culture, health care entertainment
and communication. A degree in English will better prepare you for the world of professional
work, as compared to a more narrowly focussed technical education. In general, most
employers are looking for people who can think clearly and critically.
