“King of the Schnorrers,” loosely based on an
Israel Zangvill play, is a new musical – with
wonderful klezmer songs written and performed
by Hankus Netsky – about a group of unemployed Yiddish actors-turned-beggars, led by a
proud Sephardi Jew, who bilk a wealthy movie
producer out of a considerable fortune. It is also
a love story, in the tradition of Romeo and
Juliet, about the conflict between two warring
tribes (Sephardis and Askenazis), which
is resolved through a process of “Jewish intermarriage.” Tuneful and funny, it is a piece
of history about the fading of the Yiddish
Theatre.
