C: COMMUNICATION
Marketing in the new economy is much more about
creating a dialogue with your potential customer, rather
than selling and marketing to a “prospect.” It’s about
inviting feedback, creating a dialogue, being receptive to
ideas, and responding to needs; then presenting your
product or service in response to what you have learned
through these various interactions.

SOCIAL MEDIA
MARKETING

The marketing mix has moved from a
monologue to a dialogue.

Activities that integrate technology,
telecommunication, and social
interaction.

A way to exchange information
through the use of clicks and uploads.

The connective tissue of society.

No one activity is effective by itself;
choose the ones that make sense for
your business, then integrate them.

Ask yourself the question,
“What am I doing or making
that is worth talking about?”
And then provide a forum for
people to talk about you.

Example: Grobanites for Charity

Began as a group of Josh Groban fans
on Facebook.

A fan had an idea to “pass the hat”
and collect money for a birthday gift
for Josh Groban.

The gift was to donate the money to a
charity in his name.

It’s now an official charitable
organization that has raised almost $1
million since its inception in 2002.

Operated completely by volunteers;
100% of donations go to the charities.
Facebook:
Discussion Groups and Fan Pages
Social media allows you to:
invite a conversation with your
customers.
  create a dialogue; get feedback.

determine interest in a new
product or service.
use current members to spread
the word and create a “buzz.”
  become a resource page,
allowing a brand to target a
new demographic, outside of
those that already know and
love the business.

twitter
The rule of thumb for
posting Tweets is to
keep a balance
between:
  what you are doing.
  what you are saying.
  what others may
find relevant or
interesting.

vs.
Facebook

The best media outlet to
engage in a conversation
with your customers.

You can use it to sell.

twitter

A good place to reach the
business professional: it’s
where many of them are
getting snapshots of news
and events.
This is where most
consumers are doing most of
their communicating.
[sometimes even more so
than e-mail].

You don’t really use it to sell.

Monologue rather than
dialogue [unless you get
retweeted].
There is more opportunity
for visual effects [photos,
video, links, etc.]. But, you
cannot insert multiple links.

There is no opportunity for
visual effects [photos or
video], but you can insert
multiple links.

Press Releases

Provides another vehicle by
which to distribute a
message.

Choose an online release
program that permits links.

They must be newsworthy.

They must also direct the
reader back to a place to
have a conversation.

S (search) E (engine)
O (optimization)

Use all forms of social
media and e-marketing
together in a carefully
executed integrated effort.
When you do a press
release, use the same key
words in your
  e-mail blasts
  blog posts
  Facebook
  twitter
  LinkedIn
  YouTube captions

Where Do I Start?
  [1] Begin with your Blog:
This is where you can say
the most, and insert
however many links and
images you want.
  [3] Create a series of
tweets on twitter. Pull out
quotes and links. Try and
post several per day.

  [2] Next, create a few
Facebook Wall posts.
Include specials, sales, and
coupon codes. Offer
rewards for “Liking” the
page.
  Remember: In the world
of social media marketing,
frequency trumps length!
