Climate Change
LEAD Pakistan launched a research study on mainstreaming CBA in Pakistan
LEAD Pakistan has launched a research study on Mainstreaming
Community Based Climate Change Adaptation in Pakistan to provide a framework for policy institutions. The framework is intended to encourage institutions to create a political environment
that allows communities to lead the process of adaptation as well
as development. For adaptation to occur successfully, it has to
take place with the right set of incentives and costs for communities. It also requires that ecosystem biodiversity be preserved
since removing critical species from an ecosystem, such as mangroves from coastal areas, can often make regions less resilient to
climate change. To formally launch the study, authored by Dr.
Aneel Salman, LEAD Pakistan invited researchers and practitioners in the field of climate change adaptation to a roundtable conference on May 29th, 2014. The conference was held to discuss
the shortcomings and strengths of the study in order to determine
the best way forward in terms of devising recommendations on
CBA for parliamentarians. To get a copy of this study, send an
email to Ms. Asifa Bhatti at [email protected]
Climate change: ‘Media needs to step up to teach people about environment issues’
In a three-day training course on the ‘Basics of Climate Change for Coastal Areas of Pakistan’ organised by LEAD Pakistan, former federal minister Javed Jabbar and other experts said that media has played a vital role in raising awareness on climate change and environment related issues
but it needs to do more as the people rely on it to get their information, urged environmentalists. Read more

Dr. Qamar uz Zaman Chaudhry, an eminent climate scientist and Advisor LEAD Pakistan on Climate Change, summarises the messages of the IPCC’s latest report, and draws out its implications for Pakistan. Receding Glaciers in Pakistan
Watch a short documentary made by LEAD Pakistan Fellow Saleem Shaikh on "Receding Glaciers
in Pakistan". According to him the glacier melting comes as a great threat to Pakistan as it would
result in the inundation of thousands of acres in the northern areas and displace hundreds. The
documentary was done under the media grant by the Kathmandu Based International Centre for
Integrated Mountain Development's (ICIMOD) HICAP programme. Watch Video
Seed banks help communities adapt to climate change
LEAD Pakistan Fellow Zofeen Ebrahim writes about the community seed banks in Nepal who are
helping farmers preserve local biodiversity and prepare for more erratic weather conditions.
These local seed varieties are more drought and disease resistant and require less pesticides
than genetically modified crops. Read more

Five Day Training on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation’
Recognizing the importance of the need for capacity building for DRR practitioners, under funding
from Oxfam Novib through its implementing partner, Doaba Foundation, LEAD Pakistan conducted a five day training on ‘Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction’ in Islamabad, for 25 practitioners from various grass-root level CSO’s from Sindh, Punjab and Khyber
Pukhtunkhwa. The objective of the training was to enhance knowledge, build technical capacity
and skills through training the participants about Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk
Reduction. This would be accompanied by educating and preparing participants in disaster preparedness and mitigation measures that reduce vulnerability. The sensitization of these practitioners on best practices and disaster resilient methodologies and techniques for adaptation, in order to aid them to integrate climate change adaptation into their DRR work, was seen as one of
the important outcomes of the training. Read More
The IPCC AR-5: What Does The Future Hold?

LEAD Pakistan and USAID join hands to empower Indigenous Community Conserved Areas for Wildlife Conservation in Chitral
LEAD Pakistan has signed a one year project with USAID to empower Indigenous Community
Conserved Areas for Wildlife Conservation in Chitral. The aim of the project is to map, capacitate,
network and identify enabling conditions, best practices and lessons linked to successful community-based wildlife management in Chitral. The intention is to identify the factors that have led to
success of ICCAs across a broad array of ecological and socio-cultural conditions.
The proposed project will also support public policy engagement for evidence based discussion on
ways in which the policy framework and implementation mechanisms for wildlife management in
Chitral, KPK can be improved and made more sensitive towards ICCAs.
Effort will also be made to establish a network of ICCAs that can strive to get ICCAs recognized,
develop model collaborative management plan, and get it endorsed by the KPK district government. LEAD Pakistan plans on focusing its proposed intervention on 06 ICCAs in Chitral (03 in
each Tehsil), with the aim of mapping & documenting the same, capacitating & networking their
