Moderated by: Dr David Bewick
AGENDA
0900-0905 - Welcome
Dr. David Bewick MD, FRCPC
benefit from primary ICD's. He will also address the new development of LVAD’s and the clinical applications they have for patients.
Associate Professor of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Director of Cardiovascular Health,
Wellness and Heart Function Clinic, New Brunswick Heart Centre, Saint John Regional
Hospital, Saint John, NB
1025-1045 - Break
1045-1105 - Surgical Treatment in Heart Failure
Dr. David Bewick is the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and the
Heart Function Clinic. He obtained his medical degree from Dalhousie University in 1980, where he also completed training in Internal
Medicine and Cardiology. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine
(1985) and Cardiology (1986). Dr. Bewick organized the first New
Brunswick Heart Symposium and has been the Chair since that time.
His clinical interests include echocardiography including transesophageal and stress echocardiography.
Marc Pelletier MD, FRCSC
Dr. Bewick has a legendary history of working with heart failure
patients. As today’s moderator, Dr. Bewick brings a wealth of
knowledge and expertise. He has been a strong supporter of
physician education and best practice, as evident in his leadership
with the NB Heart Symposium.
0905-1005 - Managing Heart Failure in a Difficult
World
Associate Professor of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Clinical Department Head, Cardiac
Surgery, New Brunswick Heart Centre, Saint John, NB
Dr. Marc Pelletier is the Clinical Department Head of Cardiac Surgery.
He previously has held the position of Medical Director of Cardiac
Surgery at El Camino Hospital and as a heart and lung transplant
surgeon at Stanford Medical Center. After obtaining his medical
degree from Dalhousie University in 1994, he completed a Cardiac
Surgery Residency and a Masters of Science in 2000 at McGill
University. He then traveled to Stanford University for a Fellowship in
Cardiothoracic Transplantation, which was followed by a faculty
position as Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. In 2004, Dr. Pelletier returned to
Stanford, as Assistant Professor, before taking his current position
with the New Brunswick Heart Centre.
Jonathan G. Howlett MD FRCPC FACC FSCAI
Dr. Pelletier will highlight current surgical therapies available to heart
failure patients. This is an ever evolving field which highlights the
continued changes in patient care and management.
Clinical Professor of Medicine, Department of Cardiac Sciences, Foothills Medical Centre
and University of Calgary,AB
1105-1125 - The Role of Heart Function Clinics
Dr. Jonathan Howlett is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at University
of Calgary, Foothills Medical Centre and Director of Heart Failure. His
current activities also include clinical research in heart failure, as well
as evaluation of health care delivery and outcomes and knowledge
translation. He initiated and led the 2.8 M study A Strategy of
Telehomecare for the Treatment of Heart Failure (STARTEL), a
multicentre Canadian study evaluating the impact of telehomecare
treatment for heart failure patients with issues of difficult access to
care in Atlantic Canada.
Ronald Bourgeois MD, FRCPC
Today Dr. Jonathan Howlett will speak on the diagnosis of heart
failure and various management strategies for the heart failure
patients. Dr. Howlett’s research work is in keeping with his interest in
disseminating knowledge and implementing best practices for care
providers in heart failure as well as other cardiovascular conditions.
1005-1025 - Role of Device Therapies in Heart
Failure
Michel D’Astous MD, FRCPC
Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Dr. George L. Dumont Hospital, Moncton, NB
The last few years have witnessed a surge in both the use of Internal
Cardiac Defibrillators (ICDs) and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapies
(CRT). With that we have also seen the ever evolving use of Left
Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADSs). Understanding how these various
device therapies come into play in the treatment of heart failure
remains a challenge. There are several approaches to treating
patients depending on their medical history and type of heart failure.
During this session Dr. D’Astous will offer his insight on various device
therapies and the role they play in heart failure. He will discuss the
current role of pacemakers and the evolving role of CRT in heart
failure. Dr. D’Astous will help identify for us which elderly patients
Cardiology, The Moncton Hospital
Dr. Ron Bourgeois is Division Chief of Cardiology at the Moncton
Hospital. He previously completed his training at the Université de
Sherbrooke. He brings a wealth of experience in working with heart
failure patients and is passionate about the role of heart function
clinics as a standard of care for these patients. He has had a direct
role in the development of the Moncton Hospital Heart Function
Clinic. During this session Dr. Bourgeois will examine the role of heart
function clinics, particularly how the clinic is key in preventing
readmissions for heart failure. He will address the difficulties in
transitioning the Class III-IV patient to their home environment.
1125-1145 - Exploring Palliative Care Options
Jessica Hemmings MD
When to introduce palliative care into your patient’s medical plan is
often a difficult and daunting task. Chronic heart failure is a serious
condition and equivalent to malignant disease in terms of symptom
burden, depression, quality of life issues and mortality. Only a small
number of chronic heart failure patients have the involvement of
palliative care. Dr. Hemming’s will identify when palliative care should
be introduced and what resources are available. Dr. Hemmings will
demonstrate the importance of engaging patients in these conversations and the benefits for all those involved.
1145-1230 - Q & A Panel Discussion
Moderator, Dr. David Bewick
The panel will assemble to discuss issues and challenges of the heart
failure patient, along with finding common pathways to improving
care of these patients.
A MESSAGE FROM DANIEL CONNOLLY, CEO OF THE HEART
AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF NEW BRUNSWICK
On behalf of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick, I would like to invite you to
participate alongside your colleagues in this Heart Failure Symposium. The objective of the
symposium is to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of heart failure including case
studies and current treatment options. We have brought together leading experts in the field who
will impart their knowledge through presentations and a panel discussion over the course of a half
day symposium. As of today, nearly 7600 New Brunswickers are affected by this disease. This number
continues to grow. We encourage you to join us to learn more about this very significant and wide
spread health concern.
I look forward to seeing you in May.
Dan Connolly
Heart Failure Symposium Learning Objectives
The participant should be able to:
1) Diagnose and manage basic heart failure.
2) Recognize a patient that would benefit from the introduction of various device therapies;
cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), pacemaker and internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD).
3) Describe the evolution of cardiac surgery in relation to heart failure.
4) Identify the importance of heart function clinics in the management of the heart
failure patient.
5) Integrate palliative care practices into one’s clinical practice where applicable.
