Introduction to 9-12 Grammar Cards Thank you for purchasing the 9-12 grammar cards. We believe that the value of sentence analysis is the improvement of students’ writing. The structure goes as follows: Introduction to Sentence by Purpose Introduction to Sentence by Structure Nouns Adjectives Verbs Adverbs Prepositions Pronouns Conjunctions Each grammar set has at least 10 cards for each of the three levels in an Upper Elementary classroom. We recommend that a part of speech be introduced each month, and the children work on that strand during that month. Strike the imagination lessons are usually done with the Ruth Heller series on grammar. These are excellent references as well as introductory pieces. Other resources include: Scholastic’s Guides : Checking Your Grammar Verbs, Verbs, Verbs Nitty-Gritty Grammar English Simplified by Harper and Row Little, Brown Painless Grammar Rebecca Elliot, Ph.D. Barron’s A First Book of Sentence Diagramming Eugene R. Moutoux Please note that there is no “checking key” for these cards. While we agree that working with these concepts initially may be challenging, we believe that the value of the work in an Upper Elementary classroom is the discussion and the ambiguity, not the “correctness” of the analysis. There are many references that will assist you in your work with the children. Eventually, as with all tasks, the children will surpass you. They are learning the concepts over a three year period and will become quite proficient. The biggest challenge will be the verb task cards. Take heart! This, too, will come!
