Neuro-development of Words – NOW!
NOW! Grammar & Writing™
Now!® Grammar is the modernized Visual Kinesthetic Sentence Structure (VKSS) program
developed by Dr. Ann Alexander and colleagues, fills the gap between reading sentences and
interpreting the meaning of those sentences. It was designed to build upon NOW! Mental
Imagery™ and is based in part on Dual-Coding Theory (DCT) (Paivio, 2007). Research found
that students with dyslexia often have a hard time understanding what the most important
pieces of a sentence are and subsequently have a difficult time mentally imaging sentences –
e.g. have trouble determining which noun to image as the subject. Now! Grammar™ not only
helps enhance spoken language, but it is also used as a precursor for written language.
As implied in the name, this program is also multi-sensory. It brings together several modalities:
auditory, visual and kinesthetic. The participants discover the role of individual words in a
sentence and colored blocks provide a visual association for that role– for example, a green
block represents an action verb. In the beginning portion of Now! Grammar™, students learn to
identify and use verbs, subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, adjectives, adverbs, linking
verbs, helping verbs, prepositional phrases and word groups (e.g. clauses). They analyze a
sentence and place the color-coded blocks above the words to emphasize the role of the
parts within the sentence. With this increased awareness of the mechanics of a sentence, the
student is better able to understand and produce written language. Each is then ready to
proceed to imagery for the analysis of paragraphs and essays. The NOW! Grammar therapy
continues to a higher level with the discovery of the parts of a paragraph and finally an essay.
The student then learns semantic mapping / webbing in order to create paragraphs and,
finally, essays.
Your students will not just memorize the
parts of speech; they will discover what
each part means, how each part
functions in a sentence, and how each
part adds to the overall meaning of a
sentence. Once a student is able to break
down and understand what he or she is
reading, an accurate mental image can
then be created and stored away in the
brain for future use.
Building upon the Now!® Grammar program and rooted in DCT as well as concept-mapping,
The Morris Center has developed a comprehensive writing program that assists struggling
authors with their expressive language, focus, organization, conventions, and support.

Now! Grammar and Writing is designed to build upon skills developed during Now! Mental
Imagery and Now! Grammar programs, yet can stand alone as it contains specialized
instruction for writing at the paragraph or essay level.
With a heavy emphasis on the pre-writing skills requisite for high-quality, organized responses,
the writing program takes students through a series of lessons that teach the following STEPS TO
WRITING:
