The Marriage
E
ventually the marriage contracts between
Ruqayyah and Utbah; Umm Kulthum and
Utaibah were made. The loving parents prayed
for the well being of their daughters however, the
girls were to continue to live with their parents and
younger sister Fatimah.
Soon after this stressful occasion, Prophet
Muhammad ≥, received the first revelation. In
the beginning, he quietly invited only his close
The Surah al-Masad
W
hen all these acts of wickedness reached climax and were
becoming a hindrance in the spreading of Islam, Allah
revealed the Surah al-Masad (number 111, also known as Surah
Lahab) about this husband and wife team:
that the Muslims did not believe
in Isa ∑ and Maryam. When
Negus learned about this, the
Muslim were summoned again
to his court and questioned
about this.
Negus listened to Ja‘far while
he was reciting Surah Maryam.
The king realized that what
was being recited was the
truth. Being a fair person,
Negus returned the gifts he
had received and rejected the
Makkans demand to expel
the Muslims and allowed them
to stay.
this period, all the household responsibilities fell on young
Umm Kulthum . She not only took care of her mother
and her little sister, Fatima , but also made sure that
she was extra attentive to her father in order to lighten
his grief.
Once her mother passed away just two and half years
before the Prophet’s migration, Umm Kulthum was
shouldering all of the family’s household responsibilities.
In Abyssinia, Allah blessed Ruqayyah and Uthman with
a son whom they named Abdullah. The baby filled their
lives with happiness. He was a source of consolation for
all the hardships and loneliness they had suffered. Even
though they had peace and security in the
new land, they yearned for their families and
homeland.
Two years later, they joyfully
returned to Makkah, having
heard that the conditions had
improved for the Muslims after
the conversion of Hamza ibn
Abdul Muttalib and Umar ibn
Khattab to Islam. Upon their
arrival they were shocked to
find that the conditions for
the Muslims were even worse
than before.

Lives Full
of Sacrifices
I
n 6 A.H. Prophet Muhammad ≥ decided to go to
Makkah to perform Umrah. The Quraish prevented
him and his 1500 companions from doing so. They
thought that the Muslims had come to fight. Prophet
Muhammad ≥ sent Uthman with a message that they
had come purely to worship at the sacred house and had
brought with them animals to sacrifice.
