Transcript
What is Islam?
Islam is the Arabic word for “surrender.”
According to Muslims,
Muhammad was a
prophet who received
the word of God.
Hijrah is the name of Muhammad’s journey
from Mecca to Medina in 622, which marks
the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
Muslims call their house of worship a Mosque.
The Five Pillars
• Shadahah – a statement, recited by Muslims,
that states the fundamental beliefs of Islam
• Salah – daily prayers of Muslims, said five
times a day
• Zakah – charity performed by Muslims
• Sawm – fasting (Muslims fast during the
month of Ramadan)
• Hajj – a journey or pilgrimage to Mecca
Before entering the house of God, Muslims
remove their shoes and wash (wudu) to show
respect.
Muslims do not believe in worshipping idols,
so there are no pictures, statues, or paintings
of Muhammad or any other religious figure
inside a Mosque.
Worshippers are separated by gender (men
and women go to different sections of the
Mosque).
The Qur’an is a book that contains the holy
writings of Islam.
Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol. They
do eat other kinds of meat. They also like to
eat hummus and pita bread.
The Hadith is a written record of Muhammad’s
sayings and actions.
