Muhammad- a man, believed by Muslims to have received messages from God through an angel that formed the basis of the religion Islam. Islam- a religion whose origin was in Africa. Islam means “to submit to God.” Muslim- a follower of Islam Qur’an- the holy book of Islam pilgrimage- a journey to a sacred place mosque- building for Muslim prayer jihad- to make an effort, or to struggle. This can be the inner struggle in daily life to obey God or the struggle to defend the Muslim community. Jihad could also mean ‘holy war’. Sunnah- refers to the way Muhammad lived, which provides a model for the duties and the way of life expected of Muslims Five Pillars of Islam- 5 acts of worship required of all Muslims; the Five Pillars of Islam are: 1) a statement of faith, 2) daily prayer (5 times per day) 3) a yearly donation to charity, 4) fasting- going without food or drink, 5) a pilgrimage to Mecca caliph- the title that Muslims use for the highest leader in Islam Shia- Muslims who thought that only Muhammad’s descendants could become caliphs Sunni- Muslims who didn’t think caliphs had to be related to Muhammad minaret- a narrow tower from where Muslims are called to prayer calligraphy- decorative writing
