Resveratrol May Protect the
Ears and Brain
The benefits of resveratrol, a phytonutrient known for its anti-aging
effects, may extend to protection against age-related declines in hearing
and cognition.
Scientists at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital gave resveratrol to healthy
rats that were then exposed to loud noise. The animals didn’t experience
typical amounts of hearing and cognitive loss, according to results in the
online version of Otolarnyngology—Head and Neck Surgery.
“Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against
the body’s inflammatory process as it relates to aging, cognition, and
hearing loss,” says Henry Ford’s Michael Seidman, MD, lead author
on the study. “We’ve shown that by giving animals resveratrol, we can
reduce the amount of hearing and cognitive decline.
Symptoms—A breaking out and itching of the skin, with burning and
stinging. Sometimes it comes in the form of little pimples, which turn
into water blisters. Usually the skin dries up in little scales and itches.
There are two kinds of eczema, dry, and moist weeping eczema. The
following treatment is beneficial in either case.
Treatment—Select an alkaline diet. The bowels must move regularly,
three times a day. Do not use soap and water for cleansing, use boric
acid solution. Take equal parts burdock root, yellow dock, yarrow,
and marshmallow, using a heaping teaspoonful of this mixture of
granulated herbs, to a cup of boiling water, steep, strain, and drink
one-half cupful four or five times a day. Also bathe the affected parts
freely with this same tea. Healing lotion, applied freely will relieve the
itching, and heal the skin.

The active ingredient in Garcina Cambogia is a natural compound
called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that can curb the appetite, inhibit fat
and cholesterol production, and increase energy levels.

levels through natural mechanisms, while avoiding the side effects

HCA is an organic acid that is similar to citric acid, the common
acid found in fruits, such as lemons and oranges. Unlike citric acid,
which is found in abundance throughout the plant kingdom, HCA
is limited to only a few plant species native to Southern Asia called
Garcinia. The fruit of this plant has been used for years in native
food preparation as a spice and to make meals more “filling.” HCA
is extracted from the fruit rind of the Garcinia plant. The form of
HCA indicates a particular molecular configuration and is a naturally
occurring form, which exhibits potent weight loss properties.
HCA can help curb the appetite and inhibit fat production. Here’s
how it works. Normally, calories that are not used immediately are
stored in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen, a special
type of starch. Excess calories are stored as fat, no matter if they
are carbohydrates, protein, or fat. However, for carbohydrates to
be stored as fat, a key enzyme, called ATP-citrate lyase, must be
present to facilitate this process. HCA works by interfering with the
function of this enzyme. It does this by imitating another chemical
that binds to the enzyme, rendering it ineffective. In the absence of
fat production, HCA uses another biochemical process to promote
glycogen production. When glycogen stores rise, special receptors
in the liver send a signal to the brain that says, “I’m full,” therefore
suppressing appetite and reducing food intake.
HCA works without chemical stimulants. Dieters often resort to overthe-counter stimulants to boost their metabolic rate and decrease
their appetite. Unfortunately, most appetite suppressants stimulate
the central nervous system, which often leads to side effects, such
as nervousness, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and
insomnia. These side effects can wreak havoc on those taking
needed prescription medicines, such as anti-hypertensives and heart
medications, such as beta blockers. HCA won’t cause any of these
side effects because it doesn’t work on the central nervous system,
it works via peripheral mechanisms in the liver and elsewhere to
influence the metabolism of calories.
