PATIENT’S NAME:
MEDICATION: nystatin (Brand names include Mycostatin, Nadostine, Nilstat, Nyaderm, Nystex, Nystop,
Pedi-Dri, and PMS-Nystatin.)
WHAT IT’S USED FOR: Nystatin is used to treat fungal infections, particularly candidiasis (moniliasis).
HOW TO TAKE IT
§ Take drug exactly as prescribed. Continue taking it for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside.
§ To prepare oral solution from powder, add one-eighth teaspoon to 4 ounces of water, and stir well. Take
immediately.
§ Take oral suspension by placing half of each dose in each side of your mouth. Hold suspension in
mouth, swish it around, or gargle for several minutes before swallowing it.
§ Allow troche (lozenge) to dissolve slowly and completely in your mouth. Don’t chew or swallow it whole.
§ Know that you may take nystatin vaginal tablets orally to treat candidiasis in your mouth.
§ Apply cream, ointment, or powder as prescribed by gently and thoroughly massaging into skin.
§ For vaginal administration, use applicator provided.
§ If you're using vaginal tablets, wash applicator thoroughly after each use.
§ Continue using drug menstruation. If you miss a dose, apply or take dose as soon as possible, and then
resume your regular dosing schedule.
WARNINGS & PRECAUTIONS!
§ Before taking this drug, tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver disease.
§ Know that diabetes mellitus, reinfection by sexual partner, tight-fitting pantyhose, and use of antibiotics,
hormonal contraceptives, or corticosteroids may increase your risk of vaginal infection.
§ Wear cotton underwear and practice careful hygiene in affected areas.
§ Be aware that vaginal use of this drug may damage latex contraceptives.
§ Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
SIDE EFFECTS
This drug may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal distress, mouth irritation, irritation of the
vagina and outside surrounding area (with intravaginal form), itching, and rash. Notify your prescriber of
serious or bothersome symptoms.
INTERACTIONS
§ Nystatin may interact with other steroids used on the skin. Tell all prescribers that you are taking it.
STORAGE
§ Store troche and powder for oral suspension in refrigerator at 36o to 46o F (2o to 8o C) in a tightly closed
container, protected from light.
§ Store oral suspension at room temperature.
§ Store oral tablets at room temperature; avoid excessive heat.
§ Store topical powder and vaginal tablets at controlled room temperature at 59o to 86o F 15o to 30 o C).
