How is Nystatin
Administered?
This medicine is available as a tablet, liquid, powder, cream/ointment, or
lozenge (pastille).
What Is It Used
For?
Nystatin is an antifungal used to help the body overcome fungal infections
of the skin, mouth, vagina, and intestinal tract. It is not effective against
colds, flus, or other viral infections.
What Should I
Tell My Doctor
Before I Begin
Receiving
Nystatin?
Tell your doctor if you:

have had any unusual or allergic reaction to nystatin or any other
substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.

are pregnant or breastfeeding
This drug may interact with other medications, increasing or
decreasing their effectiveness or causing harmful side effects. Tell
your doctor and pharmacist about any prescription or over-thecounter medications, vitamins, herbal or diet supplements that you
are taking.

 Itching
When Should I
Call the Doctor?
Call your doctor immediately if you experience:
 Irritation
 Burning

any sign of an allergic reaction: itching or hives, swelling in your
face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest
tightness, trouble breathing, dizziness, or palpitations

Call your doctor as soon as possible if you experience:

diarrhea

upset stomach or stomach pain

skin rash
How Can I handle
These Side
Effects?

If your stomach is upset, try small frequent meals, frequent mouth
care, sucking on hard, sugar-free candy, or chewing sugar-free gum.

Do not put anything on a rash unless your doctor or nurse practitioner
gives permission.
What Else Should
I Know About
Nystatin?

Drink two to three liters of fluids, particularly water, unless instructed to
restrict fluid intake.

Do not allow medication to come in contact with eyes.

Store the tablets and liquid at room temperature and away from excess
heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).

Store nystatin powder, lozenges (pastilles), and vaginal tablets and
cream in the refrigerator. Do not allow nystatin to freeze.

Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is
almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your
regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a
missed one.

