SPECTRASHIELD TESTING AND INSPECTION The SpectraShield® Liner System is covered by a 10-year warranty from both the manufacturer and applicator. Failures, as delineated in the warranty agreement, are repaired or replaced during the warranty period. 1. The SpectraShield system is spray applied at high temperatures (150ºF) and sets firm in a matter of seconds. Accordingly, a wet film thickness gauge cannot be used. In lieu of wet film thickness testing, a sharp pointed tool, such as a scribe or awl may be inserted into the just coated area to confirm the thickness of all three layers meets or exceeds the 500mil minimum standard. This test is a destructive test, in that it creates a holiday or void. Such testing must be performed with 10 minutes of completion so that the repair of the holiday can be performed before the system fully cures. 2. Adhesion testing may be performed on the first barrier coat only utilizing a portable adhesion tester as described in ASTM D7234. Following application of initial coat to substrate surface, mask off one or more test areas per structure. Finish applying system’s two (2) additional coats to structure except masked area. Remove masking, and glue portable adhesion tester dollies to coating as per testing device recommendation. Following adhesion curing time (typically 24 hours) testing device may be used to measure coating adhesion to substrate. Upon testing conclusion, repair masked area with final two coating layers per MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDED REPAIR method. 3. The SpectraShield Liner System may be High Voltage Spark tested in accordance with NACE RP0188-2006 “Discontinuity (Holiday) Testing of Protective Coatings”, after coating application. A high-voltage spark tester is used to determine discontinuities in the SpectraShield coating on conductive concrete or brick surfaces. Spark testing of the SpectraShield system should occur within 1 hour of the coating application. Surface moisture such as condensation deposition as from an overnight temperature change will affect the testing and would require thorough drying before testing can resume. The spark tester should be adjusted to the proper voltage for the coating thickness, which for a standard SpectraShield application is 20,000 volts; for inverts the proper voltage is 5,000 volts. All detected holidays shall be marked and repaired by the Rev 6/14 manufacturer’s recommended method. Care should be employed in the event CIPP pipe lining is present as that material will activate the test unit. 4. ASTM C1244 Vacuum Test is a method for testing newly installed precast manhole sections to demonstrate the integrity of the installed materials and the construction procedures. The test method is used for testing concrete manhole sections utilizing mortar, mastic, or gasketed joints. This test method is intended to be used as a preliminary test to enable the installer to demonstrate the condition of the concrete manholes prior to backfill. This test method is not designed for coating adhesion evaluation. 5. Visual inspection may be performed by the Project Engineer or Inspector, and any deficiencies in the finished system should be marked and repaired according to the manufacturer’s recommended method.
