LILIES
Lilies require a position in full sun or partial shade, protected from strong winds.
Any well drained soil can be used as long as there is a good supply of humus. Peat moss or
compost should be incorporated into the soil prior to planting to improve the humus content.
Super phosphate will encourage strong roots.
Besides regular bulb roots, lilies make stemroots as well, which are vital for the growth and
flowering of the plant. Therefore it is important to plant Lilies at least 6”deep.
Water well after planting and during dry weather throughout the growing season. Fertilize with a
balanced granular fertilizer (5-10-5 or 11-15-11) once every month April to July. Stake the stems
of tall growing varieties before flowering to provide additional support during windy conditions.
Remove faded flowers and do not cut back stems before the leaves yellow. Bulbs should not be
lifted, but left in the soil to flower and multiply annually for many years.
Varieties of Lilies
ASIATIC HYBRID --- These lilies bloom in early summer and reach from 2 to 3 feet high.
Their outward facing flowers come in red, pink, orange, yellow, lavender and white.
TIGER LILIES --- Pink, red, yellow and orange speckled flowers bloom mid-summer and reach
3 to 4 feet.
TRUMPET LILIES --- Summer flowering trumpets of pink, white, yellow or gold grow to 2½ 3 feet.
ORIENTAL HYBRID --- Blooms in late summer, July and August. These flat-faced flowers
have recurving petals and come in white, red and pinks. They also can grow to 2½ - 3 feet.
