Swamp Milkweed
Milkweeds are worthy of a place in the garden, both for
their flowers and their foliage, Best effect when planted in
groups. Incarnata has light plink flowers on durable 3' tall
waxy foliage, A very tough plant for wet or dry conditions.
Attracts Monarch butterflies.

Purple Coneflower ‘Magnus’
This Magnus variety of coneflower is a sturdy plant with
dark green leaves and produces large luminous crimson
blooms all summer into fall. Goldfinches love to sit on the
flowerheads once seeds start forming.
Will grow in full sun and is not fussy about soil. Grows 12″ –
30″ tall. Bloomtime: mid to late summer

Joe-Pye grows best in fertile, moist soil. A tough native
covered in pink to rose flower heads. Supports lots of
butterflies in late summer and early fall, when other flowers

Strong survivors which come back year after year. They
grow well in sun to part-shade. This variation has extra
large deep red flowers on 38 “ tall plants. Very bright.

A plant that has gotten a bad rap over the years, goldenrod
should not be confused with ragweed and scotchbroom. A
vibrant plant with feathery yellow foliage, goldenrod grows
well in sun or partial shade up to 24″ tall. Bloomtime: late
summer into fall
Golden yellow flowerheads with curliing side branches
bloom from July through November. Found on salt marshes
and beaches, but likes freshwater wet areas too. This
goldenrod attracts tons of butterflies! 3 to 6 feet tall.
Elegant pale blue flowerstalks rise like spires above whorls
of deep green leaves in July and August.
Growing 3-6 ft tall, it creates a unique vertical accent when
planted with other native plants.

Blue Flag Iris.
Hardy evergreen variegated stiff blades that grow in a neat circular clump. An
attractive plant all year round for the edge of a pond, or very wet area where
grass is hard to grow. Grows 6″ in partial shade.
With beautiful complex bell flowers, columbine thrives in sun, partial shade and
average soil. Grows to a height of 12-18″. Bloomtime: early summer
Thin, bright green, grassy leaves that branch at the tips resemble miniature
palms…It is only 8-12” high. It spreads slowly in moist to wet soils, and makes
an attractive ground cover in part shade to shade. Small birds enjoy the seeds
on this plant at the end of the season. Deer resistant.
Cardinal flowers do best in partial shade with moist soil. Their spikes of bright
color are a standout in shade gardens, which sport mostly green. This plant is
good at self-seeding in Chatham, but never becomes invasive. Sometimes the
red and blue plants have a purple baby! Each small flower on the cluster has
a shape like a bird, or cardinal. If you plant red ones, you will be guaranteed
hummingbirds. Deer resistant, Grows 24-36″ tall. Bloomtime: mid to late
summer
Bright blue flowers on 36” to 48” mounds. Flowers give way to
charcoal-black seed pods. Blooms June through July. A great
perennial! Perennial Plant of the Year - 2010 .
At home in moist soils. Grows to 5' in height. Typically the species has a range
of purple colored flowers.
Can be pinched back in the summer to form shorter stockier plants. Full Sun
Turtlehead pink flowers are shaped like their name. See if your children will
notice the similarities between the flower and the turtle. These plants grow to 2′
– 3′. They grow best in partial shade in moist soil and are cheerful surprise at
the end of the summer.
Bloomtime: late summer into fall.
Our native Iris that is at home near pond and stream edges. Blue flowers in
mid-summer. Grows 2-3 feet tall.

Although Basil may be thought of as the heart of Italian cuisine, oregano also
finds its way into sauces, salad dressings and seasonings for meat and
vegetables. A hardy plant for full sun, grows18-24″ tall.
Rosemary has aromatic, evergreen, needle-like leaves used in cooking. It is a
tender perennial that can be shaped or trained into a topiary. Grows up to 4′
tall. Best in full sun and fertile soil.
