veronicas. Likewise, Phlomis russeliana is a
plant that could be used sparingly here to
introduce a more solid element that is also
topped with upright flower spikes of a highly
distinctive form. Its yellow green foliage will
also resonate with the hard yellow of the
achilleas when in bloom.
Euphorbia polychroma ‘Major’
Tidy mounds of foliage appear in early
spring and are covered with intense yellow
flower heads in late spring. In autumn the
plants develop coral tones and offer a second
flush of flowers. This form is larger growing
than the more frequently offered species.

Festuca mairei
A nicely proportioned evergreen grass
with drooping grey-green leaves up to 75cm
long that bears sparsely branched flower
spikes in mid summer. It should be trimmed
back lightly in early spring to keep it tidy,
otherwise maintenance free.

Veronica longifolia ‘Blauriesin’
We grow this plant for its long display of slim violet
blue flower spikes borne in summer. It grows easily and
will seed itself around if happy. Although it can tolerate
some summer drought it needs to be grown on retentive
soils if flowering is not to be curtailed. In drier situations
it would be better to substitute Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’
for a similar vertical accent.
Height 80cm Spread 30cm
Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’
The wild plant is course and weedy in comparison
to this vertical growing, rigid selection found by Ernst
Pagels. The foliage is sparse allowing the stems to be
clearly seen with the reddish pink flowers arranged in
small wreaths at intervals. Any shading will cause the
plants to lean over so an open sunny site is essential.

Anaphalis - Salvia - Geranium - Selinum - Aster
Meadow schemes normally infer grasses, but
this need not always be so. Here a ground covering mosaic of perennials is created to act as
an under story for a display of elegant Selinum
wallichianum with its fine thread like foliage
and horizontal plates of white summer flowers.
Complementary plants spring up through the
ground cover to reinforce the meadow like feel.
