ORGANIC SEED Lambley is trying to source as much certified organic seed as possible. Any
seed listed as organic has been certified organic in its country of origin.
ASCOT is 12km north of the Western freeway, which by-passes Ballarat, on the C287, the
Clunes-Maryborough Road, about halfway between Miners Rest and Clunes.

Flower Seeds
We are offering a terrific selection of flower seeds in this catalogue. Many are new strains from the world’s best
breeders and many are old favourites that used to flourish in our grandparents’ gardens. Most varieties listed
need no special skills to grow well and are happy sown in situ. We use many of the annuals you can find in this
catalogue in our own flower gardens which are well worth a visit.
The use of annuals and biennials are such an important part of gardening. They bring so much joy, trigger so
many memories.
The seeds we sell are imported from the best breeders and suppliers in Europe and the USA. We buy seed in
relatively small amounts so that we always sell fresh seed with excellent germination rates. Sowing instructions
are on the seed packets.
3
Amaranthus (Love-Lies-Bleeding) So much beauty for so little effort. Amaranthus are such easily grown annuals
which will self sow every year to give a fantastic summer and autumn display. Sow seeds in situ in a sunny spot
from early spring, in warm areas, to late spring in cold districts. Thin resulting seedlings to 40-50cm apart. All are
impressive cut flowers and bold garden plants.
Amaranthus ‘Green Thumb’
Amaranthus ‘Emerald Tassels’
Amaranthus gangeticus ‘Carnival’
The most effective way I’ve grown this was
as a backdrop to lime green Zinnias and a
greenish white sunflower. In good soil it will
grow 160cm tall by 80cm wide. The long
green tassels are produced from midsummer until late autumn. 100 seeds $4.00

A beautiful annual from Mexico which we
use as a quick fill in bare spots in the dry

long spring, summer and autumn display of
large white poppies. We just sprinkle the
seed in the garden where we want the
poppies to grow.

Rudbeckia hirta Rudbeckias put on a terrific show during summer and autumn. They were stand out plants in our
double flower borders last year where their large vivid flowers held sway for many months. We treat them as
annuals but they are in fact perennials. Plant seed undercover in early spring or plant outdoors mid to late spring.
Happiest in a sunny spot these Rudbeckias are very heat tolerant and reasonably drought tolerant although we do
water them occasionally during the summer. All make good cut flowers and none need staking.

Pollen-free Sunflowers
These are the result of many years of hard work from an Australian flower breeder. Until recently all his seed was
sold to commercial cut flower growers. The big advantage that the pollen-free sunflowers have over traditional
sorts is that they last much longer when picked. Each flower also lasts much longer in the garden than older
varieties. The following are all branching varieties. If you want them for cut flowers then nip out the leader when it
reaches 25cm in height. If you want a fine garden plant let it grow naturally giving it about 60cm space. They grow
from 150 to 180cm tall depending on soil conditions. I generally plant sunflower seed 1cm deep from November
until January but October wouldn’t be too early and in warmer gardens seed can be planted in September. They
don’t need a lot of extra irrigation and are happiest in full sun.

Zinnias
Zinnias were grown in every grandmother’s garden but in latter years have all but vanished from the scene. One
reason is that if Zinnias are bought as seedlings success is unlikely. Zinnias must be direct seeded into the
garden. Plant 3 seeds per station when the weather warms up (mid-November here at Lambley) in well drained
soil in a sunny spot. Thin to the strongest seedling when the first true leaves appear. Zinnias start to flower in
January and produce until well into April. They are especially good as a cut flower as well as being bright cheerful
garden subjects.

Vegetable Seeds
Vegetable Seed for the Serious Gardener
The vegetable seed in this catalogue has been selected by Lambley because we think it is the best available seed
for people wanting a productive vegetable garden. This seed is far and away better than the seed offered in
garden centres and big box stores.
We offer very little “heirloom” vegetable seed as in our opinion “heirloom” seed, is more often than not, second
rate. Vegetables grown from our seed have terrific flavour, excellent germination rates and good disease
resistance. They are generally quicker to reach harvesting stage and are slower to bolt than “heirloom” types.
Most varieties we sell have been trialled over the past few years in our large and productive vegetable garden.
Much of the seed we sell is hybrid seed. It is not genetically engineered seed.
To quote the late Lawrence D. Hills, a renowned advocate for organic vegetable growing and founder of the Henry
Doubleday Foundation (now Garden Organic) in the UK.
“Scientific and accurate breeding programmes have made it possible not only to bring out the outstanding qualities
of the parent plants, but in most cases, these qualities have been enhanced and new desirable characteristics
added to the resulting hybrid plants. In addition to qualities like good vigour, trueness to type, heavy yields and
high uniformity which hybrid plants enjoy, other characteristics such as earliness, disease resistance and good
holding ability have been incorporated into most F1 hybrids.
“We can’t expect to get all these advantages for nothing because creating F1 hybrids involves many years of
preparation. So you often have to pay more for your seed or get fewer in a packet. It works both ways. The
gardener gets better, though more expensive varieties and the plant breeder gets a reasonable return on the
investment.”
Storing Seed
We buy our seed in relatively small quantities which means our seed is really fresh. If stored properly all will be
viable for several years. Our seed comes to you in an airtight plastic envelope which can be resealed. Place the
seed packet in a plastic food container in the fridge with a water absorbing gel. Fluctuating temperatures and
dampness are the enemy of long term seed viability. Parsnip though should be bought fresh each year. We throw
any leftover parsnip seed away and buy new stock every year.
Lambley Nursery is a GM free zone.

Fennel ‘Orion F1’ Organic
From mid-spring until mid-summer direct
sow seeds into a well prepared sunny bed.

pumpkins. Plant 3 seeds per station 60cm
apart and thin to the strongest seedling
when the first true leaves appear. Allow a
spread of 200cm if grown on the ground.

Cauliflower
Modern commercial strains of cauliflower aren’t difficult to grow well but the right varieties must be planted at the
right time. As cauliflowers don’t hold well in the garden, a week at the most, it’s best to plant small numbers, say 3
or 4, every couple of weeks rather than a dozen at a time. Cauliflowers prefer a well drained fertile soil high in
organic matter and a Ph of 6-7.5. A spacing of 45 cm between plants and 60-80cm between rows. Sow seed
under cover or direct sow.
Cauliflower ‘Bishop F1’

flavour. Easier to grow than most varieties.
Sow seeds undercover from September until
January. They will take two to three weeks to
germinate. Plant out when large enough
spacing 20cm apart in rows 60cm apart.
Keep well watered. If young plants are
exposed to temperatures below 13C for ten
days or more there is a good chance that
they will bolt.
Organic 50 seeds $4.40
Cucumbers For early sow seed undercover on bottom heat one seed per 7.5-10cm pot 4 or 5 weeks before
weather warms up. Plant 35cm apart in rows 150-180cm apart or 45cm apart if growing on trellis. Direct sow after

Herbs
Basil ‘Goldfields Early Wonder’
Basil ‘Italian Large Leaf’
Chervil ‘Vertissimo’
‘Gold Fields’ is a selection of Genovese
basil, the one used for pesto, that is more
tolerant of cold weather than traditional
varieties. A strong plant with dark green
leaves it has all the flavour of older types but
can be sown a month or two earlier. Plant
seed direct from November until the end of
January.
100 seeds $5.00
This variety is sweeter and has less of a
clove-like flavour than normal basil. I find it a
much pleasanter basil to use in pesto and
tomato salads. I never plant basil seed, or
plants for that matter, in the open garden
before December as cold weather is
anathema to this delicious herb.
200 seeds $4.00
Vertissimo is a slow bolting deliciously
flavoured chervil. It can be used in salads,
as a micro green or a garnish. Plant seed in
drills in the garden in spring and again in

its seeds so I grow this slow bolting variety.

half and will, under reasonable conditions,
take three or four months before it runs up to
seed. It’s best to sow seed at six weekly
intervals.
200 seeds $4.00
Parsley ‘Giant of Italy’
Parsley ‘Curly Leafed Starlett’
A real giant but with wonderful Italian parsley
flavour this is the variety which has amazed
visitors to the nursery with its size and
productivity. I plant seed on bottom heat
early in the spring and outside in the garden
after mid-November. Parsley will sometime
bolt if seed is planted in soil which is too
cold.
150 seeds $4.00
A terrific moss leaved curly parsley, neat

Capsicum and Chili
Capsicum ‘Synergy F1’
Synergy is an early red, blocky, sweet
capsicum which ripens well in cooler
districts. It has good disease resistance and
good leaf cover to protect the fruit from
scalding in the heat of summer.
15 seeds $5.00
Older varieties of capsicum and chilli struggled to ripen in the cooler parts
of southern Australia. The following have all been trialled in southern
Victoria and will ripen even here in chilly old Central Highlands. Plant the
seed into individual 5cm to 7.5cm pots on a bottom heat in mid August.
Germination is quick. Leave on heat until October and then move the
plants off the heat but still keep them under cover. In November harden off
outside for a few days whilst still in the pots. Plant out and stake. Put a
plastic tree guard around the seedling to protect it from wind and cold for a
few weeks. In December when the plants are in strong growth remove the
tree guard. Put four 80cm stakes in a circle around the plant to stop it
falling over when bearing fruit.

Australia as well as warmer areas.

Pumpkins All pumpkins taste better when allowed to cure for a month or so after picking. I keep them inside lying
on their sides in a dry place where the temperature rarely gets below 14C. I plant these pumpkin varieties in midNovember after the danger of frosts is over. In milder climates they can be planted earlier.
