SOCIAL STUDIES GRADE SEVEN
--------------------------- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------PRE-HONORS WORLD HISTORY 7
Full Year
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Purpose: The purpose is to align the junior high social studies department with PA social studies
standards. Although various social studies academic standards will be integrated throughout the
seventh grade course, the primary focus will address world history.
Description: Through the study of ancient civilizations to the emergence of the modern western
world, this course intends that the student: understand the nature of history and geography as
a discipline of study; perceive historical change as a continuing process; identify, tolerate, and
appreciate diversities and unities among mankind; recognize the cumulative nature of
civilization; analyze man's striving toward democratic goals; note connections between
geographical themes and historical processes; and acquire, develop, and reinforce basic social
studies skills. In addition, the student will have developed the skills to use and interpret maps,
charts, graphs and time lines. The major units of study include Early Civilizations, The Ancient
World, New Ideas and New Faiths, The Middle Ages, and A Changing World.
Requirements: Students are expected to show satisfactory achievement on quizzes and
objective and essay tests. Students are expected to complete regularly assigned textbook and
frequent supplementary readings. Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and will include
vocabulary work, study guides, content-driven written expression, oral and written reports,
projects, map work, and current events. The student will be expected to participate in class
discussions and to keep a well-organized notebook of daily activities. At this level students are
expected to be more independent learners, to think more critically, and to make evaluations on
course content. There is a greater frequency of the use of primary and secondary sources, indepth discussion, and written expression.
Prerequisites: Recommendations of sixth grade teacher.
