Infectious Disease Assignment: Wanted Poster
Make a wanted poster for one of the bacterial pathogens you have been assigned in
class.
Include:
☐ Poster is to be on 8.5" x 11" paper
☐ Large "WANTED" text at the top
☐ Below the WANTED text write the name of the pathogen (causative agent with correct
spelling and nomenclature) and the disease it causes.
☐ Below that include picture of the causative agent, you can even draw them like
cartoon, add COLOR if you can! Make sure you draw flagella or cilia if they have
any. Label DNA/RNA for any viruses. Remember they are the villains, so no smiley
Pathogen. You may write special characteristics / description of the pathogen
around the picture.
☐ Include picture of the disease if available.
☐ “Culprit’s M.O.”(Modus operandi) (How the organism attacks and spreadspathogenesis and epidemiology)
☐ “Victims” (Pathogen targets these individuals… very young, very old, pregnant
females, or otherwise healthy people)
☐ “Hide out of the culprit” (where it is most likely to be found)
☐ “You are in danger if ..” (symptoms)
☐ “ How to get help” (Best cure)
☐ “How to stay away” (Prevention)
☐ Must be neat and colorful!
Note to students : Please note down anything unique, about the pathogen or the
disease process, any example or any story that you would like to share with the class.
Note to the Instructor: This activity can be modified in variety of ways. It can be a
graded assignment with a point value attached to each of the guidelines. Research
component can be included, for this, students can be directed to www.cdc.gov . If they
are researching about the disease from any other resource other than textbook, then
include references on the poster (in fine print). To increase the point value of the
assignment you can ask the students to find any article about the disease or news
related to the disease which has happened in the past 5 years.
I had requested students to bring the posters to class when that particular disease
chapter was discussed, we hung them on the wall for others to review, and then we
discussed the disease.
I used this activity for the first time in my class of 36 students this semester for the
Introductory Microbiology course and it was very effective .The discussions were lively.
Some students did go an extra mile by giving a retro look to their posters by dipping
them in black tea and burning the edges!
