Research Fellow – Marine Economics J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) Post Ref. No. NUIG 123-12 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term contract position from 12th March 2013 to project end date of 15th December 2015 as a Research Fellow in Economics, in the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded through the Beaufort Marine Research Award, which is carried out under the Sea Change Strategy and the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (2006-2013), with the support of the Marine Institute, funded under the Marine Research Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan 2007–2013.This appointment is part of a strategic alliance between the NUI Galway (SEMRU www.nuigalway.ie/semru/), Teagasc (www.teagasc.ie) and the Marine Institute (www.marine.ie), to develop a marine socio-economic analysis, modelling and forecasting capacity in Ireland. Job Description: The Research Fellow will work in an interdisciplinary environment with PhD students, post docs, research scientists, and faculty staff from NUI Galway, Teagasc and the Marine Institute and will assist in the training of other young researchers in the area of marine socio-economics. The Research Fellow will join the current SEMRU Team in examining a range of issues pertaining to the Irish Ocean Economy, the efficiency and competitiveness of marine industries in Ireland and the socio-economic impact of Irish and European marine related policy changes (see http://www.nuigalway.ie/semru/research.html). The specific work programme to be pursued will be determined considering the current SEMRU work programme and the specific skills and expertise brought by the successful Research Fellow but the successful candidate will be expected to take over responsibility for a number of existing projects within the Beaufort Work programme within SEMRU. The researcher will also be expected to write up project proposals with the aim of generating future research funding for marine socio-economics research in Ireland. The post holder will present their work in oral format, at international project meetings and symposia as well as in related marine stakeholder fora. They will also be expected to work on the production of written reports and of publications in the peer reviewed scientific literature and popular press. Applicant’s Specifications: Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant research area (e.g. Marine/Environmental Economics/Economics) and should have a minimum of 3 years relevant research experience. They should also have a good publications record. Candidates should have proven research expertise and competence in quantitative modelling and research techniques and methods pertinent to the marine socio-economic area. Candidates should also have the capacity to lead a research team and successfully bid for research funding. Good oral and written communication skills in a variety of contexts are also important.
