3 Senior Research Positions Remote Sensing, Data Assimilation, and Modelling of Atmospheric Composition Impacts Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) School of Physics, National University of Ireland, Galway Ref. No. NUIG 125-16 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for full time, fixed term position(s) as a Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Fellow in the Centre for Climate and Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS), NUI Galway. The positions contribute to the Science Foundation Ireland-funded Centre on Marine Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) and are available from 1st January, initially for two years, with an option to extend for a further two years subject of project outcome success and funding. The positions will be supervised by Professor Colin O’Dowd (http://www.nuigalway.ie/physics). C-CAPS conduct research into atmospheric composition change and its influence on air pollution and climate change. More detail is found on www.macehead.org. The research position is funded by the Science Foundation Ireland as part of the Observations and Monitoring for Marine Renewable Energy spoke to the Marine Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) research centre (http://www.marei.ie ). The positions are associated with the sub-project High-Resolution Marine Meteorology Observation and Forecasting: Remote Sensing, Modelling, Data Assimilation and Integration. Research Description: The aim of the research is to improve the accuracy and spatial-temporal resolution of observations and forecasting of weather and atmospheric composition through the development of hi-resolution models and integration of Earth Observation data streams using data assimilation and data fusion techniques. The Earth Observation and forecasting system will simultaneously generate downstream products for multiple end users: marine meteorology (e.g. wind, radiation, turbulence) for the marine renewable energy research community and clouds/icing, air pollution/ash, wind shear etc. for the aviation community. These positions will develop and oversee operational forecast modelling of marine meteorology and atmospheric composition, in particular, aerosols, clouds and radiation in the context of the energy budget, renewable energy and climate change. In addition, development of the models will include data assimilation and model evaluation. The current model of choice is WRF-CHEM. Qualifications and Experience: The ideal candidates must have a PhD in atmospheric composition/meteorology research along with collective experience in meteorological and atmospheric composition modelling (e.g. air pollution, airborne hazard dispersion or climate modelling), data assimilation, and remote sensing of aerosol and clouds. Collective, the successful candidates would form an effective and synergetic team to deliver the research advances and forecasting operational system required to meet the objectives of the programme. For appointment at the Research Fellow level, candidates should have 10 years experience in addition to a PhD and should have a track record of interaction with key actors across the EU and beyond along with interacting with relevant funding agencies; development of National EO-Modelling strategies; and harmonisation Ireland’s atmospheric composition modelling activities on the European stage. Salary range: €37,750 – €56,442 per annum.
