LESSON PLAN
Topic: Physiology: Digestive system
Name: Michael Keith
Class: Integrated Science II
Grade Level: 10-12
Major Concepts: The pathway of digestion: components of the digestive system
Performance Objective / Content Standards:
PHYSIOLOGY: 9. As a result of the coordinated structures and functions of organ
systems, the internal environment of the human body remains relatively stable
(homeostatic) despite changes in the outside environment. As a basis for understanding
this concept:
a. Students know how the complementary activity of major body
systems provides cells with oxygen and nutrients and removes toxic
waste products such as carbon dioxide.
Materials and Equipment:
 Internet Access
 Butcher paper
 Meter sticks, metric rulers
 Handout –digestive system



Yarn –3 different colors
Scotch tape
Scissors
Independent practice / Assignments:
Use the following websites for assignments and information
 http://www.gen.umn.edu/faculty_staff/jensen/1135/webanatomy/wa_digestive/
o Use this website to practice the parts of the digestive system
 http://www.borg.com/~lubehawk/hdigsys.htm
o Use this site to check yourself on the digestive system
 http://www.ekcsk12.org/science/regbio/nutritionexam.html
o This website contains an entire assessment of digestive system w/answers
Outline of Lesson:
Intro: Give each student a soda cracker. Have them keep it in their mouth until
they taste the sweetness. Where does the sweetness come from? Answer: amylase
breakdown of the carbohydrate.
Handout: follow handout on next page for lesson and conclusion
Homework: Write down what you eat tonight and predict where digestion is
occurring for each food.

Human digestive system length:


An 8.5 meter long piece of rope can be used to illustrate the length of the
alimentary canal.
Approximate lengths for each part of the alimentary canal are as follows:
 mouth, 15cm
 pharynx, 15cm
 esophagus, 35cm
 stomach, 30cm
 duodenum, 25cm
 jejunum, 2.5m
 ileum, 3m
 colon, 1.5m
 rectum, 15cm
 If the rope has a diameter of 2.5cm, the size of the small intestine, the part
of the rope representing the small intestine can be coiled to show how the
intestine fits into the abdominal cavity.
Directions:
1. Using the above approximate lengths for each part of the alimentary canal,
measure out lengths with the meter stick/metric ruler and cut separate colored
yarn for the following:
 Mouth, pharynx, esophagus total length
 Stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum total length
 Colon, rectum total length
2. Layout the entire length of the alimentary canal
3. Tape the separate lengths together
Options:
 Tape the entire length across a wall
 Outline a student on butcher paper and fit the alimentary canal you’ve
measure out appropriately within the outline.
 Make table in MS Excel and create conversion of metric to standard units
 Make graph of table in excel to show relative lengths; digestion vs.
ingestion
Questions:
1. What percentage of the alimentary canal is devoted to digestion? Ingestion?
2. What is your reaction to the length of the digestive system?
