Action Verbs
Objects are always
nouns or pronouns.
The object is the
person or thing
affected by the
ACTION described in
the verb.
Subject Verb Direct Object
Questions to help you find the direct object:
1. Find the subject of the sentence.
Do this by asking yourself "who" or "what" the sentence is about.
Freddy bought Melinda a ring.
Who bought the ring? Freddy. Freddy is the subject.
2. Only action verbs have an object.
Our verb is action (bought)
3. What did Freddy buy?
A ring. You've found the direct object.
Subject Verb Direct Object
Indirect Object
Freddy bought Melinda a ring.
4. To find the indirect object, find the word between the
action verb (bought) and the direct object (ring) that answers
one of 4 questions: "to/for whom" or “to/for what”
Freddy
bought
ring
Melinda
Freddy bought Melinda a ring.
Who bought the
ring?
•Freddy
What did Freddy
do?
•bought
What did Freddy
buy?
•a ring
For whom did
Freddy buy the ring?

A predicate noun is a noun or pronoun that follows a
linking verb and identifies, renames, or explains the
subject.
To find a predicate noun,
1. first find the subject and the linking verb.
2. Then find the noun or pronoun that follows the
verb and that identifies, renames, or explains the
subject.
3. This word will be the predicate noun.
Subject linking verb
Steve
is
predicate noun
president
A predicate adjective is an adjective that follows
a linking verb and modifies the subject.
To find a predicate adjective,
1. first find the subject and the linking verb.
2. Then find the adjective that follows the verb
and describes the subject.
3. This word will be the predicate adjective.
