What is the definition of infinitive?
An infinitive consists of the words ‘to+verb”.
It names an action and is used mostly as a complement of a verb.
Example: Setku loves to sing.
to+verb=infinitive.
Infinitives are divided of two kinds.
a) Simple or Noun Infinitive.
To walk is good for health.
b) Gerundial or Qwalifying
infinitive
We eat to live.
Where is gerundial Infinitive used ?
Modify an adjective:
Rana is too weak to walk.
I am glad to receive your letter.
Simple or noun Infinitive is used as:
Subject of verb: To err is human.
Object of a verb: He likes to swim.
Object of a Preposition:
He is about to die.
Complement to verb:
He seems to be an honest man.
Modify a verb:
Boltu goes to school to learn.
Please give a pen to write.
Modify a noun:
This is a house to let.
It is a chair to sit on.

To be brief, I am ruined.
After certain verbs (let, make, need, hear,watch,see,dare)
the infinitive is ommitted.
I saw her go home.
Let him come.
Where infinitive is ommitted.
I heard her cry.
He made me read the book.
But in the passive voice of these verbs (except let) infinitive ‘to’ is used.
Shahida was seen to go.
Where is bare infinitive used?
He can not but laugh.
Had better,had rather,would rather and can not but are bare
infinitive.
What is perfect infinitive?
I wished to have gone there.
Perfect infinitive is formed by using “to have” before a
principal verb:
I request you to kindly help me.
I request you to help me kindly.
I requst you to quickly run.
I request you to run quickly.
Split infinitive: Sometimes adverb or adverb phrase is used in between
infinitive and the verb in the sentence, in that case it is a split infinitive.
