Used to-past simple
USED TO
• We use 'used to' for something that
happened regularly in the past, but no
longer happens.
• e.g. I used to drive to work, but now I take
the bus.
• We also use it for something that was true
but no longer is.
• e.g. There used to be a cinema in the town,
but now there isn't.
Past Simple
We use Past Simple to talk about something
that we did at a specific time in the past
In the past simple we put –ed at the end of the
verb
e.g. Play- played
Be careful! Some verbs are irregular
e.g. take-took
"Used to" vs. Simple Past
We use "Used to" + bare infinitive
to talk about past habits, past
facts and past states; We can
replace “used to”+ bare infinitive
with past simple without
changing the meaning.
BUT…
When we refer to something that we did at a
specific time in the past we use PAST SIMPLE
• e.g. My friend, Susan, wore a beautiful silk
shirt at the party lest night.
AND NOW… IT’S TIME
